Guys, i am not seeking a fatwa, but....what do you do when

(A) you are served fondue at someone's house.  Its cheese cooked in alcohol, but the the alcohol has all evaporated

(B) you buy some fried fish at a fish and chips shop -- and find out that it was cooked in a beer batter.  the alcohol has all evaporated, but it was cooked in it...?

You don't actually consume the alcohol, and chemical composition might change (shafii way out), so....

note, i am asking just out of curiousity not because it is a pressing issue..

Salams,

I would say better safe than sorry in matters of doubt, wouldn't you agree?

Asalaam alaikum,

Site Admin?   ???  Bro. Hanif, or Nomi, uhhh, you guys should change your nick back to your appropriate nick, for a minute there I got confused and was going to check with Jannah to see if she changed the Anonymous account name.

But yeah, I agree with Mossy, better to be safe then sorry.  I've also heard that not all the alcohol evaporates, so why risk it.

actually, I meant the question about....like when you....like get stuck....like when the choice is either to eat some stuff or put up a fuss...

....like i once got stuck with the fondue thing at my (academic) supervisor's house...i wasn't quite sure what to do...

...actually the reason i raised this was because I was recently supposed to reconvince some semi-muslim that islam was really great after all...

he came up with issues like science and islam aren't compatible. this (as always)  turned out to be a fake reason, and the real reason why he didn't want to practice was because he couldn't be bothered to, and didn't want to obey all the strictures of religion.  i told him religion is supposed to simplify your life, not complicate it.  he mentioned stuff like the pain of having to always look for halal, the pain of having to avoid alcohol and the supposed modern day supposed irrationality of not eating pork...and the pain about worrying about whether preservatives like E471 contains animal extracts, etc...

i told him you can do all these things if you were really stuck, and then I brought up the fondue and fish and chips examples to explain how a lot of what people do has to do with judgement...and that islam is not the tyrannical thing messing up his life that he thought it was...

anyhow,....you can ignore me...i'm just being my usual idiotic self...:)

seriously, if i was really stuck..and really tongue tied at the academic advisor's for example..i would say something like "I am allergic to cheese" :P

hey, it works:)

For your friend, instead of arguing the details out...why not focus on the larger issues..Our Shaykh once said "If the Rasul  [saw]'s first statement was NEVER drink Alcohol anymore..or NEVER commit adultery", no one would have become Muslim (this was paraphrasing Aisha (RA) ).

The point is, you can't convince someone of the details of Islam, if they don't have the fundamental belief of Allah, the beauty of submission, and even the concept of the sweetness of faith in their hearts. There was a lot of amazing diplomacy that the Rasul  [saw] used to nurture the Sahabis from the depths of darkness to the point they became great towering mountains of illumination for humanity...how did he do that?

Most of the semi Muslims that argue about the drudgery of Islam, have no clue what's really at stake. Instead of trying to prove that Islam is easy, when it can really be a struggle at times...start talking more philosophy, plant the seeds of the Grandeur of Allah in their hearts, and the emptiness of having this void inside without the Nur of Allah's guidance within...let him truly understand the concept of Tawheed, and how its manifested undeniably in every subconscious process of our being...when one is truly convinced of the higher Truth, the rest becomes a joy to "suffer" through... ;)

May Allah guide us all (Amin).

Sis in struggle, :-)
