What are rightous deeds

I came across this while reading the Womans pages here on the site:

If any do deeds of righteousness, be they male or female,
and have faith, they will enter Paradise
and not the least injustice will be done to them.
[Quran 4:124]

Upon thinking about this verse many thoughts came to mind.
Ok God, I'll try to do as much righteous stuff as I can to please you.
Then I began thinking of what is truly righteous???
If we are doing it to please God is it truly righteous???
If we are doing it just to achieve paradise is it righteous???
Or if we do it to help another, cause it is the right thing to do, is that make a deed righteous???

What exactly is a righteous deed???
Feeding the poor, being kind to someone who is not kind to us, helping the homeless??? All the above???

Was hoping to begin a conversation on righteous deeds, anyone game?

[slm],
Sr. azizah, please correct the spelling of the word "righteous".

You ask what is a righteous deed?

What is right and what is wrong is determined by Allah subhanu wa ta'ala.  He alone knows what is good for us and what is not.  So He has made laws and rules for us muslims, and perfected our code of conduct.  Prophet Muhammad  [saw] provided us with his example that shows us how to do things.  If we follow both the Qur'an and the Sunnah we shall never go wrong.  If we do anything that is not in the Qur'an and Sunnah, then we are certainly going to go astray somewhere.  In the Qur'an we are told to believe in Allah and His Messenger so that we may learn righteousness.

A deed should be done or not done solely for the sake of Allah.  Our aim is to follow the commandments of Allah subhanu wa ta'ala and to please Him.  Hence, only those deeds are righteous that are recommended by Allah and His Messenger.

At least that is what I feel.  I may be wrong.

Salams,

Taking it back to the basics, a large component of any deed is the intention behind this deed - one's niyyat.

Righteousness has a variety of meanings - but the pertinent one in this case is doing a deed to please Allah (swt) as you, as a muslim, are thusly submitting oneself to his will.

To paraphrase a hadith, come Qiyamat there will be three men - a scholar, one who has died on the battlefield and one who has been charitable. However, the scholar learnt due to a desire for fame, the soldier fought for the reputation and the philanthropist gave to impress those around him. One by one they will be condemned to the hellfire. It's always interesting to think on one's motivations for any given action - who are you doing this for?

I'll look up some details on that verse and like hadith tomorrow when I have more time insh'Allah.

fi aman Allah,

Mossy

I remembered this verse in answer to your question:

[code]
It is not righteousness that you turn your faces towards east or west; but it is righteousness to believe in God and the Last Day, and the Angels, and the Book, and the Messengers; to spend of your substance, out of love for Him, for your kin, for orphans, for the needy, for the wayfarer, for those who ask, and for the ransom of slaves; to be steadfast in prayer, and practice regular charity; to fulfil the contracts which ye have made; and to be firm and patient, in pain (or suffering) and adversity, and throughout all periods of panic. Such are the people of truth, the God-fearing.

Quran 2:177
