History books and online Islamic courses

Assalamu Alaikum,

I'd like some advice regarding good books on the history of the Arabs in english.  I've been approached by a non-Muslim who would like to better understand the Muslims she lives around in the U.S. but my main source of historical knowledge was from a book called "Outlines of Islamic History" by Kazi Publications which may not be able over there.  I intend to recommend Ar-Raheeq Al-Makhtoom as well (what do you think?).

Another question I'd lilke to ask is about on-line Islamic courses.  I know of a Muslim sister who is unable to travel to universities but is willing to learn from online courses.  Could you please direct me to all the quality courses you know of so I can forward the addresses to her.

as salaamu alaykum,

Hmm.. would they like to learn about the history of *Arabs* specifically, meaning the Middle East and some of the events that have led up to its recent problems, or about *Muslims* and Islam in history?

I'm not sure about ar-Raheeq.. it is an excellent book in terms of its authenticity and detail about the seerah of Rasulullah [saw], but I don't think it is the most appropriate book for a non-Muslim.  What do you think about Martin Lings' Muhammad?

I think 'the Idiot's Guide to Islam' is a really good general intro.. or for something that is more historical, I think Karen Armstrong's 'Islam: A Short History' does a really good job of going chronologically through major Islamic events and movements from the time of Rasulullah [saw] until now.. though it is pretty term and fact-heavy.

About online courses.. check out : http://www.studyislam.com/iiu/university/main.jsp

The Internet Islamic University has some really great teachers, and I've heard good things about it.

I hope this is helpful :)  you can also check out the jannah.org book review page for some more book recs @ jannah.org/books

take care :)

Hey  :) I was also thinking of starting a thread asking for recommendations on Islamic history.  Are there any really good ones out there which deal with such eras as the caliphate, the Ottoman empire, and even the crusades ( :o :P), which of course don't depict the muslims as barbarians etc  ::)...

Jazak'Allaah khayran  :)

as-salaamu alaikum

I've read a very good book called "The crusades through Arab eyes" by Amin Maalouf which i'd recommend.

Assalamu Alaikum,

Okay well so fat I have found the following courses:

-The American Open University http://www.open-university.edu/
-The London Open College http://www.londonoc.com/English/
-Study Islam http://www.studyislam.com/iiu/university/main.jsp
-Studying Islam http://www.studying-islam.org/ which is actually entirely free.

I'd like to ask if anyone here as any experience with these courses in reference to quality and feasibility for someone studying abroad (as in outside the US) and living with a family.  Money is also important.  Unfortunately average prices for Americans can be way beyond the reach of the internet surfing Pakistani.

Studying-Islam.org so far looks to be entirely free.  Although I'm pretty sure they don't offer a degree what do people think about it in general?

Jazzakumullahu Khair
