To many things

I'm in the process of packing for a move that should of been done 3 weeks or so ago. I am sooo flustered and frustrated.
I have way to much stuff and stuff that I do not enjoy and is taking up space and serves no useful purpose other then to collect dust.
I began thinking about the materialistic ways people are, including myself.
It's time to throw out and / or donate things.
It's amazing stuff we save only to never use.
Time to really simplify my life. A friend came to visit me a couple years ago from England and she said people in the US have so many things. Things on walls, things on shelves, things....things....things.
Why do you think we collect so much junk?

We should remind ourselves that we are but a traveller in this materialistic world. When people get attached to this dunya(world) and everything in it, they don't think about Death. Thus, they start collecting stuff and start wasting their time. We should remind ourselves everyday that this world is only a passing enjoyment.
hope this made sense! :P

Even with that knowledge in mind, we still collect things not for materialistic purposes only but mostly for sentimental values.  I do this a lot.  I love an item, it could be a clothing, a shoe, a post card, to mention but a few.  Everytime I do a clean up with the intention of getting rid of unncecessary stuff, I see something old that I can not throw away because of the memories attached to it.  So, I decide to keep and in the process, continue to accummulate stuff.

I cousin of mine calls me a museum because she is always amazed at things that I still keep.  She will see something that I have a kept for over ten years for example and still do not want to throw it away!  She says I should have my own museum.

I am glad I am buying the house in which I live.  This way, I do not have to contend with a lot of the accummulated junk that I would have had to sort through or throw away if I had to move.

Cheers,

Halima

I'm in the process of moving as well and I'm trying to get rid of stuff too.  What's being accumulated in this house is mostly bank statements and bills and other papers that my husband doesn't want to get rid of just in case we need them one day.
But there's also stuff of mine that I haven't used in years...
I started giving it away.
My husband also gets all sorts of free stuff at all these different events he attends for his work, mainly with the intention of giving it to the kids in the family but we just wind up keeping it.
and then there's old pens and other stuff that have to do with writing and using paper, a practice now obsolete  :D
and outgrown baby clothes!!
Unlike you Halima, I'm not the sentimental type at all, and usually don't keep things for sentimental reasons. To me it's not important at all, especially since al hamdu lillah the happy time in my life that want to remember is in my current life, not in the past (in fact I wanna forget past lives as much as possible!)  My husband does like to keep momentos, and we're getting buried by them  :P
They used to have a show on BBC Prime called Life Laundry.  Basically this person who's trained in this kind of thing goes to people who can't get rid of stuff and helps them work through whatever psychological thing that's blockign them, usually a divorce or death of someone they loved.
There's always a before and after of the house of course.

I feel that if i haven't used an item for the last five yrs.........probably I wont use it in the next five yrs to come.........so why not donate it.Insha'Allah less clutter and more thawab.
