Islamic Political Theory
A Weekend Seminar with Dr. Azzam Tamimi
March 13-14 2004, University of Waterloo, Canada

http://www.muslim.uwaterloo.ca/ipt/

The aftermath of the tragedies of September 11, 2001 has witnessed pages of analysis of the interplay between Islam and politics in today's world. Self-proclaimed experts have offered opinions ranging from the antagonistic belief that the Islamic faith represents a backward religion which poses a serious challenge to the spread of freedom and basic human rights to the oft-quoted, yet rarely substantiated, proclamation that Islam is a religion of peace. A distinguishing feature of most of this commentary is its inability to discourse in terms of the vast and sophisticated tradition of Islamic political theory, the analysts preferring to rely on case studies from the contemporary Muslim world or selective passages from sacred texts to validate their claims. This void has been felt for some time by both Muslims and non-Muslims alike.

In holding this seminar, the organizers aim to inject this ongoing dialogue with a well-developed and mature understanding of the history of Islamic political thought. Classical and contemporary political theorists have repeatedly drawn from the Qur'an and the life of the Prophet Muhammad and his Companions to construct robust systems of political theory which they have understood to be faithful both to the Islamic faith and the contingencies of their time. The seminar aims to give participants a deep appreciation for the discipline of Islamic political theory as a result of the profound contributions of serious and committed Muslim thinkers, rather than a rigid, established order based on ill-conceived and misguided sloganeering.

Our speaker, Dr. Azzam Tamimi, is eminently well-qualified to help us achieve these goals. The holder of a doctorate in political theory, Dr. Tamimi is the Director of the Institute of Islamic Political Thought and is widely respected for his command of both the Western and Islamic traditions of political philosophy, as well as his views on contemporary political issues in the Muslim world. He has traveled extensively to offer this and similar training modules to students and activists around the world.

The organizers hope that this seminar will prove beneficial for anyone interested in furthering the discourse on the relationship between normative Islam and political theory in a meaningful way. Please explore the rest of this website to learn more about the seminar, and how to register. We strongly encourage everyone interested to register as soon as possible, as spaces are limited.

Should you have any further questions, please feel free to contact the organizers.
