HELP ME!!! Please. (Laptop Problems)

Assalam alaikum.

I need help, desperately. Earlier tonight I was playing around on my mom's notebook computer  :-[ and I created a password for her username. Then I shut it off and a while later went back on to it and it didn't load properly so I had to reset it. When I did that, it asked me for the password (that I had forgotten I set) and I couldn't remember it.  :'( And now I am locked out for good from her computer. I have tried *everything* I know of to remedy it but nothing has worked. I called HP and was on the line with them for almost 2 hours, and I keep getting told that I will have to delete and re-install everything! :(

I have tried the Windows XP restore and to run it in safe mode but nothing has worked. It's locked tight.  :o

Somebody PLEASE HELP ME! My mom has so many important files on there that are not backed up and if she loses them she will kill me (well not literally) but she will be so disappointed I couldn't bear it.

She will be home in 2 days and I don't want her to know right now about this problem because it will stress her out. Help. I am desperate to solve this problem. I can only access webmail right now so if you have a solution for me either type it here in the thread or email me at MsTranquility@hotmail.com, please.

Thank you for any support you can provide.

Why do all kids have to do same mistakes :)

Relax, take some deep breaths and read on.

My cousin (15) also forgot his password of his XP system and i had to reinstall his M$ windoze, there weren't any important files so it didn't took long to fix it, had'nt had much time so its only half way there.

Ok, ok, i'm gonna give you the solution, no need to go red on my rant :)

What'll work for you is to goto some computer geek and ask him/her (a him in most cases) to take backup of your disk data on his system, it'll be done by taking out HDD of your system and hooking it onto the other system as a slave drive. Its easy, no fuss, so relax. Just make sure that the other person is trustworthy and wouldn't have a see at your data.

wlm,

Your brother

ps: did you know that when you type
s-l-m-, OR w-l-m-,
on a single line in your posts (without hyphens but with coma) it gets expanded to the full full Salaam? i.e.

slm,

AND

[slm],

I have never worked on XP, but is there an administrator username on XP, if so then maybe the password for it was left blank?

And reinstalling from Windows CD shouldn't delete the files unless you format the hard disk.

Sorry this happened Stephanie... It must be frustrating...

Hmm.. It might be late now.. but I found these instructions online.
I’m not working in xp to try them out for you first Sis..
So...  ?? Does anyone know if it would work? :
FORGOT WINDOWS PASSWORD

If you assigned a password to access Windows and then you suffer a
memory lapse, not to worry.  Bypass Windows with F8 during startup
and choose the Command Prompt Only option.  At the prompt, go to
the Windows directory with "cd\windows" (without the quotes).
Delete .pwl files with "del *.pwl" (again, without the quotes) and
no password will be required on the next boot. A new password can
be set if you wish by starting with your "Start" button:

Start | Settings | Control Panel | Passwords => Change Windows Password
Just try not to worry ... as has been suggested already.. the info is there..it won’t go anywhere as long as you ‘DO NOT REFORMAT.’  I think re-installing windows would possibly work too & if you cannot get it ... I'm sure the info can be pulled like Brother Nomi suggested... maybe you can find someone around you to help you out...

:-[ Best Wishes with it Sis

That procedure is for Windows 9x/ME.

stephanie:

eqbal has made a good suggestion, but in case that doens't works:

For Windows XP, the easiest/cheapest way out is to try reinstalling XP to the same folder (usually C:\WINDOWS, C:\WINNT, or C:\WINXP). You will be asked to supply a new administrator password. If this doesn't works, try reinstalling XP to a NEW folder, this will surely work. Just DO NOT format the hard drive. Don't panic, there is no danger to the data on your computer. Your mom might need to reinstall just about all the other softwares, but that wouldn't be too hard now would it. I STRONGLY suggest you wait till your mom returns and let her do this by herself.

Assalam alaikum Everyone,

Thank you all so much for your advice. I wonder why HP never told me that we could back up her hard drive on another computer  ???

Anyway, we tried to reinstall Windows XP  and it still asked for a password, even for the administrator. It did the same thing in Safe Mode. The Microsoft website said that it is for security reasons if you forget your password you have no choice but to reformat it. And for those who use Windows XP, if you set a password, you can do a password reset disk just in case you forget it.  ::)

Well, all is good now though.  :-/ My mom's friend took her laptop to Best Buy and they backed up her data for $60 and we reformatted it last night and re-installed everything. Nothing was lost, alhamdulillah!

You were all a great help. Thank you. :)
