ISLAMIC NEW YEAR

* UMAR IBN AL-KHATTAB INTRODUCED THE ISLAMIC(HIJRI) CALENDAR to keep track
of letters with time-stamps thus uniting the different dating methods of
 his time.

* COUNTING BACK TO THE YEAR OF THE HIJRAH TO DETERMINE WHEN TO START:
 16 July, 622 CE = 1 Muharram, 1 AH.

* OUR YEAR BEGINS WITH SACRIFICE (HIJRAH OF MUSLIMS, OF PROPHETS) AND ENDS
WITH SACRIFICE (HAJJ, HIJRAH OF HAJRA, HIJRAH OF UMMAH TO MAKKAH)

* LUNAR: BASED UPON THE MOON, accurate,  close,  visible,  reminder of the
beauty, order, submission of Allah's creation but also its imperfection,
its rise and fall, it needs the sun to shine, we interact with the signs
of Allah when we look for the new  moon  every  month, it is not passive
 time-keeping  and  time-passing,  it's  natural, animals, sea-creatures,
oceans, plants, even human cycles are lunar timed.

* WE ROTATE THROUGHT HE SEASONS, dynamic, perpetual, summer is not just in
June, Eid is not just in winter, a nation of all times and  all seasons,
we remain steadfast no matter what the season.

* NOTE THE MEANING OF THE NAMES OF THE MONTHS and  compare  to  the  pagan
 Gregorian names:

01. MUHARRAM         - ["Forbidden" - it is one of the four  months during
which time it  is forbidden to wage war or fight]
02. SAFAR            - ["Empty" or "Yellow"]
03. RABI AL AWAL     - ["First spring"]
04. RABI AL THANI    - ["Second spring"]
05. JAMAATH AL AWAL  - ["First freezing"]
06. JUMAATH AL THANI - ["Second freezing"]
07. RAJAB            - ["To respect" - this is  another  holy  month  when
                        fighting is prohibited]
08. SHABAN           - ["To spread and distribute"]
09. RAMADAN          - ["Parched thirst" - this  is  the  month of Islamic
                        daytime fasting]
10. SHAWWAL          - ["To be light and vigorous"]
11. DHUL-QA'EDAH     - ["The  month  of  rest" -  another  month  when  no
                        warfare or fighting is allowed]

annual pilgrimage to Mecca, again when no warfare
                        or fighting is allowed]

                   -------------------------------
                   FASTING ON 9th & 10th MUHARRAM:
                   -------------------------------
               AHADITH - Fasting TASU'A and `AASHURAA'

Tasu`aa' and `Aashuraa' are respectively  the  ninth  and the tenth day of
the month of Muharram.

Ibn Abbas reported: "The Prophet (SAWS) came to Madinah and found the Jews
fasting the day of Ashura. He asked them: "Why are you  fasting this day?"
They said: "This is a great day. Allah saved Moosa (Moses) and  the tribes
of Israel from their enemies  on  this  day  and  therefore Prophet  Moosa
fasted on it. "The Prophet (SAWS) said: "We have  more of a right to Moosa
than you." So he fasted on that day also and ordered the people to fast on
that day." [al-Bukhari and Muslim].

When the Prophet Salla Allahu alaihi wa salam, fasted  the  day of Ashura,
the people told him that this day is a day that Jews and Christians honor.
The Prophet (SAWS) said: "When the following  year  comes, Allah  willing,
we shall fast both the NINTH and the TENTH day  of Muharram (that is to be
different from the  Jews  and  the Christians.)" The Prophet Salla  Allahu
alaihi wa sallam, died before the following year."[Muslim]

Abu Hurairah reported: "I asked the Prophet: "Which prayer  is  best after
the obligatory prayers?" He said: "PRAYER DURING THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT."
I asked: "Which fast  is  best after  the  fast  of  Ramadhan?"  He  said:
"FASTING DURING THE MONTH OF MUHARRAM." [Muslim].  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *
