I was curious when someone accepts Islam and becomes a Muslim, after saying there is only one God and Muhammad was his prophet...Then what? What are some of the first few things recommended a person do in order to develope their faith and strength of faith and also to do what pleases Allah? I mean is the first priority learning prayers? Or what? In order of importance, what are the first 3 things recommended? |

I think i know this lady !! Okay here is my humble advice (if that counts? ;) ) 1] Dont panic... seriously, like dont be too hard on yourself and try to change yourself over night. 2] Make good muslims your friends and be in their company. Keep talking to a shaykh or a shaykha about your problems. 3] Dont let any wacko Muslim tick you off. There are lots of trips out there (i may well be one of them :P ) Only 3 eh? 4] Dont forget to let me know.. i'll send you books, lots of books ("Matrix" style ;D ) |

Learning the prayers is the first priority after becoming a Muslim and the five prayers become incumbent as soon as you become a Muslim. There are many good links for learning the prayers. Learning how to make ablution is also needed, since it is a requirement for prayers. This is one link: http://english.islamway.com/prayer/BegSound.htm Focus on the prayers is number one. You may also want to increase your faith and knowledge by reading the meaning of the Qur'an in English and reading the story of the life of Prophet, [saw]. Sounds like you are close. :) |

To the best of my knowledge... Top three 1. Truely understanding that Allah is one and only. The Arabic word is Taweed, if you are thinking of googling. Tawheed has millions of different facets and levels to it and it is a fascinating journey to become knowledgeable in this area. I highly recommend it. 2. Pray- learn the way Muhammad pbuh did it. It will seem a bit weird at first because it is alien to the Christian way. The best advice I can give you is for you to reflect on when you gave your children advice. Sometimes we ourselves do not understand the reason, just know it is right and works. Kind of like learning to walk... ya gotta take the baby steps...you just will fall on your face if you try to start sprinting! On the same analogy... if you start out sprinting... you may not finish the race... slow and steady ... Keep this in mind. Most reverts are Muslim for about 5 years before they are comfortable with their Islam 3. Charity- there is all different kinds, Dawah/ Education charity is always good! In my experience I found the top three were the most important. Everything fell in place after these areas were semi-covered. |

Assalamu Alaikum The most important to practice is the prayer! If you do not get it right at first, do not give up, just keep doing your best Inshallah. Also, if you can get with other sisters for support that is very important. This statement i found very interesting : "Remember, Islam is a state of becoming not a state of being!" This is the full extract, worth reading. Your Mission: To be a Mumin & a Mujahid Having taken the first step and resolved to attain Paradise, you may ask yourself, what does Allah require from me in order for me to succeed? What Allah requires of you, in Quranic vocabulary, is for you to be a Mumin and Mujahid. A Mumin is one who is true and firm in his faith in God. A Mujahid is one who strives his utmost, with all the means at his disposal, to gain God's pleasure. If you are a Mumin and a Mujahid, Allah will assist you to rise to higher stations both in this world and in the Hereafter. You now have a mission: to become a Mumin and Mujahid. As you embark upon this mission you may come to feel that your knowledge of Islam is somewhat limited or perhaps that you are unable to attain those heights of submission and purification that you desire or others expect of you. This is only natural. You must not, however, allow these feelings of personal shortcomings to undermine your efforts to practice Islam. Remember, Islam is a state of becoming not a state of being! Each day you must strive to improve and better yourself- and you will improve. Principle of Gradualism: Tazkiya or this program for self-improvement that you now find yourself in, is a process that unfolds itself step by step. You cannot expect to change yourself all at once. The Prophet (peace be upon him) was always aware of this when he was dealing with his companions. This gradual process of change is also clearly reflected in the manner in which the Quran was revealed over a period of 23 years. In all your efforts towards becoming a better believer, you must bear in mind this principle of gradualism, otherwise you may try to attain the impossible, and when you do not achieve it, you may become frustrated. Once you have committed yourself to Allah, all that you have must be spent in His way. This is the ideal. Ideals, however, are always difficult to achieve- and this you must understand and accept. Ideals are always to be pursued; if they are easily and always achievable, they can hardly remain as ideals. It is the seeking and striving to spend all our efforts in the way of Allah that his known as Jihad and alternatively, in this instance, as Tazkiya.
