Salams,

Not the greatest of books in the world - http://www.answeringmanji.com/ has some essays detailing why.

alsalamu alaykum wa rhmat Ullahi wa barakatuh

I haven't read the book, but have recieved questions about it.  Non-Muslims are so curious to see what the Muslim community thinks about Manji's book.  Just last week i pulled up the critique done by Dr. Sheema Khan.  Its an excellent critique. I encourage you all to read it and the other articles at the link Mossy provided. It would be great if someone would compile a small booklet with these articles and somehow distribute it to those interested in 'the trouble with Manji's book'. May Allah ta'ala guide her.  She apparently forgets that as Muslims, its incumbent upon us to constantly strive to gain knowledge, she seems to be comfortable with ignorance.

Considering Irshad Manji is buddies with Daniel Pipes, and Salman Rashdie, oh and is also a lesbian and has a tv show on queer tv, or something like that, i would just avoid her book.  From what i've seen of her is that she is a good speaker, knows how to argue but as Dr. Sheema Khan said, she takes minority opinions (not scholarly opinions) and makes them seem like the majority opinion.  She seems to be an attention hungry journalist with an agenda.

nuff said.

She's definitely a good speaker, but only because she can talk, not because she is making a point, even from a philosophical or sociological perspective.  I like to compare her to Michael Moore, who shocks the world, but really is just exaggerating facts.  I followed her pretty closely when she was in Toronto like 6 months back, and I realized something.  She doesn't answer any questions.  She turns them around and says "well what do YOU think?"  Watching her argue with Jamal Badawi was pretty painful, because he's so soft spoken and she's the complete opposite of that.

Anyway I liked what Ziaullah Khan had to say about this issue, that her "message" will thrive with attention, especially since she raises philosophically legitimate questions, but is not legitimately looking for answers.

After she spoke at our university (that was a really tense time at school, I kept praying that we didn't turn into another Concordia, especially since she was endorsed by a Jewish student group to speak), I looked up her site, and the first thing I saw was an Ayah from the Qur'an which she had quoted incompletely, which said (and I paraphrase) that we should stand up for truth and justice even if it means going against our community, our elders, our parents, and even ourselves.  I got really depressed after reading that, so I decided to look up the Ayah itself.  The really amusing thing is that the Ayah immediately preceeding that one says that (once again, paraphrased) we should believe in God, his angels, his Book, his messengers, etc etc.

Did she conveniently miss that?  My question is simply this: how does she justify her belief in Islam if she doesn't believe in the Qur'an as the message or the Prophet (saw) as the messenger of Allah?

In this day and age, she is not bound by religion.  She can criticize Islam by being an outsider (which she is), but she gets more attention by convincing everyone that she's Muslim.  And it's not her sexuality that throws me off, it's her dream of revolutionizing the essence of Islam.  What's up with that?

Anyway, my advice, don't buy the book, it's a really fast read.  Just set out half a day to spend at Chapters, buy a Chocolate Brownie Frapp at Starbucks (or sneak in your own food), and read.

Wasalaam.

Do you remember where/when she talked with Dr. Badawi?  Was it on TV?  Can I get a hold of a video or audio track of those talks by any chance?

Jazaki Allahu khairan.
