Any suggestions of good Islamic books?

Dear everyone,

I'm going to be travelling quite a distance to an Islamic bookstore to purchase some items for my mom and I was wondering if any of you have suggestions on the following subjects:

1. Quran tafseer - Are there any good books/sets of books that you would recommend? Anything other than Ibn Kathir's?

2. Imam Nawawi's 40 Hadith - there are so many books on this subject. Is there one good set that you would recommend?

3. Raising children Islamically - this would be any book that would be geared more towards a non-Muslim raising a Muslim child. A book that will help someone learn about and appreciate our religion and the practices we have.

4. Quran recitation - there are so many reciters out there. Who would you recommend?

5. Lecture videos - From Shaykh Hamza, Imam Zaid Shakir, Shaykh Abdullah Adhami, and the many *great* others. Are there any out there that have moved you?

6. For children - *any* books for children would be nice.

7. Muslim women - I can't think of a certain topic, just some general stories about amazing Muslim women and their accomplishments.

8. The Sahabi - we don't have any stories about the great Companions of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) so anything you recommend would be good.

Anything you could suggest that might be of use I will be ever so grateful. I know it is a short time frame but if you can help, I need the information asap.

Thank you so much.

1. Quran tafseer - Are there any good books/sets of books that you would recommend? Anything other than Ibn Kathir's?

If you are looking for tafseer books in arabic there are tons...but english not to many.  Ibn Kathirs is the best one in my opinion but also you can check out Sayid Qutbs tafseer of teh quran as well as Maulana Maududi's Tafseer of teh quran..they aren't as authentic but still pretty good.

2. Imam Nawawi's 40 Hadith - there are so many books on this subject. Is there one good set that you would recommend?

Al Basheer Publications has a set by Jamal ud deen Zarabozo which is masahallah amazing.  It is a 3 volume set which is very extensive (ie. it gives the chan of narration, the biography of the sahabas who narrated it, when it was narrated and so on).

3. Raising children Islamically - this would be any book that would be geared more towards a non-Muslim raising a Muslim child. A book that will help someone learn about and appreciate our religion and the practices we have.

I don;t know if there is any book targeting a non muslim raising a muslim child...you might wanna get basic books on the teachings of islam, but there are plenty of books about parenting for muslim parents.  A really good one from what i heard and sells alot in our local bookstore is parenting in the west.

4. Quran recitation - there are so many reciters out there. Who would you recommend?

Shaykh Abu Bakr As Shatry

5. Lecture videos - From Shaykh Hamza, Imam Zaid Shakir, Shaykh Abdullah Adhami, and the many *great* others. Are there any out there that have moved you?

Shaykh Khalid Yaseen just came out with some amazing ones,

6. For children - *any* books for children would be nice.

A publisher by the name of Goodword Kids or Goodwork Kids has a huge selection of books for children, everybook store pretty much carries these books.

7. Muslim women - I can't think of a certain topic, just some general stories about amazing Muslim women and their accomplishments.

Men and Women Around the Messenger is really good, also the IDeal Muslimah and also companions of the prophet saws (it has some stories of sahabiyat in it)

8. The Sahabi - we don't have any stories about the great Companions of Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) so anything you recommend would be good.

Men around the messenger is an amazing book,  also the precious pearls...it is abot the 10 promised jannah.  Another good book is Commanders of the Muslim Army.

Inshallah that helps

I hope it's not too late to reply to your post!
1. Quran tafseer - Are there any good books/sets of books that you would recommend? Anything other than Ibn Kathir's?
The only tafsir of the Qur'an which has been translated into English completely is Ibn Kathir's tafsir and Syed Abul A'laa Maududi's tafsir (The Meaning of the Qur'an).  Syed Qutb's tafsir is excellent, but incomplete.  There's also a very nice tafsir called Ma'aarif al-Qur'an, but it's also incomplete.

Ditto Betason's recommendation of Zarabozo's work.  It is a little expensive, but excellent.

They're all good! :)

My favorites (in no specific order):

Imam Shaatiree
Imam Ghaamidee
Imam Rashid al-Ifasi
Imam Qahtaany
Shaykh Minshawi
Shaykh Jibreel
Imam Burraak
Imam Sudais

There's a book called Seerat Aaisha, by Sulaiman Nadvi.  I haven't read the English translation, but the original work in Urdu is *amazing*.
8. The Sahabi - we don't have any stories about the great Companions of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) so anything you recommend would be good.
Ditto Betason's recommendation of Men Around the Messenger.

1. Raheeq al-Makhtoom, biography of the Prophet [saw] written by Safiur Rahman Mubarakpuri
2. Riyad al-Saaliheen, a collection of hadith by Imam Nawawi
3. The audio sets of Anwar Awlaki are all good, especially his latest one on the Seerah.

Wassalamu alaikum wa rahmatullah
