[slm] i'm posting here on behalf of my friend& colleague, a muslima muhajiba, who will travel alone this weekend to Palm Springs, Cali. coz her boss insisted on her attending a conference. :( the question is: is there any halal restaurants/masjids around that area? actually, i clicked on the zahibah website, and found under the cali. list, 1) san francisco bay area, 2)LA 3) sacremento 4) san diego 5) central valley - so which 1 does palm springs fall under? she is actually v. reluctant to attend, (leaving behind her kids - especially during school holiday, and husband), but since she is the only engineer with a US visa, she has to go. It takes months to get a US visa to enter, and not all applicants are approved. I really feel sorry for her, and I am concerned for her safety - any suggestions? the trials that career women have to go through... believe me, she'd rather be at home, but circumstances dictate that she works... thanks :-) |

[slm] Palm springs is closer to LA, but is in the middle of nowhere basically. Its the middle of the frikkin desert! Smells like a defence contract. Anyways, its a small town (by LA standards) and as far as I recall the muslim community is mostly desi. I heard they have a musallah there as well, not sure about the location though. The closest place where she can find some Indian or desi food for sure AND a masjid is Moreno Valley, only 45 miles north-west, heh. Palm Springs is kinda nice this time of year weather wise. Also, If she golfs she will be in 7th heaven. There are over 100 golf courses within 25 miles. I am sure this is no help at all, but Palm Springs is a very safe place to go. Not a lot of crime and most of the population is over 80 unless you count the snow birds from the north that come down during the winter. |

[slm] I'm not so sure it would be a good idea to go to palm springs this time of year. After all, its spring break time and there will be a lot of college and high schoolers there partying. |

[/quote] I was in the same situation as she is in and travelled at the same time she did last year. Make a lot of du'a and dhikir. Make sure she carries letter from the company stating the purpose she was there. My trip was from here ( same country as you are faith *i think*) - Taipei- LA-Austin. I was worried and paranoid after reading so many incidents in the news of how Muslims were treated at the airports. I avoided doing or carrying things that became the source of suspicion in the incidents I have read abt. But, the hijab still travelled on my head with me. At the LA airport, there was a delay at the immigration because their system was down and it decided to break down at my turn! All sort of things went thru my mind at that time. But, as I stepped out , I saw a lot of Muslims (and hijabis) at the airport. First thing I said was, "Man, I feel like I am back home in KLIA". I was more anxious abt coming back because of SARS outbreak. Can't the husband/children follow her for a holiday? (Assuming that the husband/children do not have visa)The visa application is pretty fast nowadays. Fill the form, attend the interview on the same day and in about a week it should be done. Mention that they are following their wife/mom on her trip. That would help a lot. 9thM |
