| Birmingham Women’s Awareness Week Presents: ‘Unveiling Islam’ Have you ever wondered why the most controversial and misunderstood religion is also the fastest growing with over 1.4 billion follower’s worldwide, with the majority of converts being women, given the widespread view that Islam treats women poorly? It is a well-known fact that in the majority of democratic societies across the world, women have had to struggle to get where they are today, their rights not being granted to them voluntarily but through force; they couldn’t own property, write wills, or vote! In Islam, women are recognised as full and equal partners of men. He is the father; she is the mother, and both are essential for life. Although Islam gives her equal rights, they are however not identical, but based on the biological and physiological differences of the genders. [i]"Women’s Awareness Week"[/i] brings to you a whole range of events from the 15th-21st of March. The aim of each event is to educate individuals, help explore and understand rather than to ignore and prejudge the true potential of Muslim women, identifying their development and contributions in today’s society. Events Calendar Monday 15th March – The Official Launch of "Women’s Awareness Week". Guests include Clare Short, Rehana Sadiq and the Lady Mayoress. [i]Time: 12pm-1pm. Venue: Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, Gas Hall, Chamberlain Square.[/i] Wednesday 17th March – Interfaith Dialogue, "Women: Prisoners of Faith?". Discussion on the position of women in Islam, Christianity and Judaism and their roles in the family, workplace and society. [i]Time: 6:30pm-8:30pm. Venue: Carrs Lane Church, Birth Wright Room, Moor Street, Queensway. B4 7SX[/i] Thursday 18th March – Social Event. This event aims to bring a high quality educational yet entertaining programme. A variety of stalls will be held ranging from gifts and calligraphy to clothing and bookstalls in addition to a number of women-only workshops including hair and beauty, sign language, glass painting, jewellery making, relaxation techniques and food from across the world. [i]Entrance: £1 (Adults) 50p (Children) Time: 6pm-10pm. Venue: Moseley Hall, 496 Moseley Road. Birmingham B12[/i] Saturday 20th March – Combined Health & Careers Fair. Brought to you in conjunction with the Asian Deaf Group, Muslim Women’s Helpline and the NHS. The event included workshops, demonstrations and presentations by experts in various fields of health including stress management and depression. Other services & advice were on offer such as counselling services, height and weight measurements, health stalls and advice pregnancy and motherhood combined with a mini careers fair. There will also be a children’s play area. [i]Time: 2pm-6pm. Venue: Small Heath Community Centre, Muntz Street, Small Heath B10 9RX[/i] Sunday 21st March – Educational Seminar. "Unveiling Islam; Changing Perceptions Of Muslims Past, Present and Future." Guest speakers include: * Sarah Joseph (co-editor of EMEL magazine) * Dr Abdul Hakim Murad (Lecturer of Theology, Cambridge University) * Abu Muntasir (President of JIMAS). The need to challenge the negative stereotypes of Islamic fundamentalism, extremism and women’s position in Islam is urgent for those Muslims who live in the West. The discourse in the popular mind is one of the backwardness, violence and barbarity of Islam, Arabs and Muslims. This seminar will aim to address the historical consequences of Imperialism and Orientalism on past and modern day perceptions of Muslims and in particular of women. Rediscover the roles and positions that ‘Western’ Muslim women are undertaking both in the private and public arena and redefine Muslim identity in the new millennia. [i]This will be an invitation only event, with some capacity for the public, which can be reserved on a first-come-first-serve basis.
