Assalamu alaikum

I am a looking for sisters who wear the hijab to answer this question for me.

Why do you choose to cover?

I want to post your answers anonymously on a web site I am  a member of called www.writing.com

So I am going to write about the hijab and what I need is your permission to quote why you personally choose to cover.

The piece I am featuring will be a series of quotes. A lot and I mean thousands of ppl visit this site, and so your help would be appreciated.

When you answer this question please also state

1.Age
2. Location (country)
3.Status (married etc)
4. Employment if any (no. of kids too)

Your quote can be as long or as short as you wish and I will edit where neccessary, and may not include all quotes.

Jazakallah for your help

well...okk...here is my response:

i choose to cover simply because Allah has told us to. Period. And obeying him should be the goal of every muslim.
secondly, i feel comfortable when i cover because i know that i have respect, and also people won't judge me by my body, but by my character and personality. Also, when u wear the hijab, ur letting the world know that u are a muslim.  :-)awesome.
there are sooo many advantages of wearing the hijab. you don't have to  worry how ur hair looks!  :D
thats it for now.
oops! i almost forgot. i am from U.S(California) and i am currently a sophomore in high school.

I've been thinking about it, I just didnt want to be the first to respond.
I think covering is freeing.  It saves energy to know that I'm not being oggeled at least not for that.  I cover a lot that is I wear hijab and jilbab because modestly covering makes me comfortable.  Even before I could cover sometimes I didnt look forward to warm weather and the compuction to wear less clothing because of it.
Not covering is alot of effort in not pleasing Allah, covering pleases me and Allah.
I'm a bit of a fashionista though, even though I cover, theres no ruling about being a little funky that I even want to hear about so long as my body is modestly covered, but I try to keep it subtle so as not to draw attention.
Sometimes people see how much I cover and mutter something about bin Laden since I cover quite a bit more than is typical of this comunity where there are alot of jeans and tight sweaters and big fluffy hijabs (my hijabs tend to fit a little tighter since i like having periferal vision).  But I dont understand how they can say things like that about a woman by herself at the bus stop no matter what she is wearing.  I can only imagine what they will say when I start wearing niqab whenever I feel like it, and whenever i am oficially "off duty".
well thats me, and I'm 30ish and workig on an MA in the US in Teaching English as a Second or Other language and Applied linguisics and when I graduate I'll teach english, inshaallah.

well sister, sis nida took da words out of my mouth  ::) :)

i cover cos Allah has ordered us 2 and there is so much hikmah in it

i remember my quran teacher at school telling us that we should liken ourselves to precious jewels  :) and just as we cover up jewels to protect them, we need to cover ourselves. I though that was a beautiful comparison  :-)

I don't mind answering your question because I think it's really important for non-Muslims to know. Here's my response:

1.) 27
2.) US
3.) Married, with one child
4.) Student

Why I choose to cover is first because Allah (swt) commanded us to do so BUT there's more to it. I used to be curious about why things are the way they are in in Islam, especially some of Allah's (swt) commandments. For example, why intoxicating substances are forbidden. I used to seek answer's from scholar's, Imam's, parent's, etc about them. I'd get answer's which I thought were very logical so I accepted them into my beliefs. But as I grew older and saw more things
in life, life itself answered many of those same questions. It would be like a light bulb that flashed above my head, and I would say Subhan-Allah I can understand the hikmah (wisdom) behind why this is forbidden (or acceptable/encouraged). To be able to SEE with my own eyes gave me a stronger belief in it than what my parent's or Imam or Scholar had told me. It was like Allah (swt) SHOWED me why. Now back to the hijab. Not only do I wear it because Allah(swt) has ordered me to do so but also because I understand the hikmah behind it. I believe in it and I believe that with it not only does it make me strong and confident but it makes my husband and daughter admire me as such AND it makes the world see me the same way. Whenever you see a woman with a head covering, it's synonmous with God fearing and everybody knows that whoever believes and fears God has a strength that is unbreakable. That's why I feel so many hate us because we are strong, and united by that same unbreakable faith. I am extremely proud to be Muslim and I thank Allah (swt) for guiding me unto the straight path. I am also extremely proud to be a Muslim woman and no man because unlike a brother who can go unnoticed as a Muslim, I cannot. My hijab is my visible proof of my belief and when I walk outside I lift my head up high so that everyone see's that it's not oppression but faith.

Hope that answer's your question.

Did not see your post til now.

I'm 28, US, and I'm a computer Tech for the State gov.

When I was younger, I chose to cover because my religion told me so. However, I did not cover when I went to school for fear of being teased since I was one of the other Muslim girl that went there.  I struggled about my religion for a while when I was younger.  Even questioned it and I questioned God above.  Fortunately, it was only once.  It needed to be only once and I never questioned Him again.

Now I cover fully, all the time, because God told me so.  I've covered since my senior year of high school.  I woke up one day and realized: why am I afraid of covering in school.  It's not like they see me uncovered in public.  So I wore it and my Christain freind came to pick me up for school and it was like...oh.  Then we went to my cousin's house to pick her up and she was like...oh.  Then I went to school and they were like...ohhhhh.

I only had one incident where a boy made a comment about a Nun going to school.  I just turned around and said, may God guide you rightly.  That was it.

My mother never enforced the scarf on me.  She just let me be and let me realize how important it was for myself.  You cover for the right reasons not to just identify yourself as a Muslimah.

Ma-assalama.....
