hello,
I'm thinking of a career in Public health.

1) Anyone know what the lucrative and booming careers in this field are?

2) Would it be very unIslamic to think of careers in Refugee health and stuff which would require travelling to countries like Afganistan etc

3) Know anyone who is in this field?

Public health is a very vast field with various sub concentrations some of them are as follows:

1)      Epidemiology – One can do an MS/PHD or do an MPH with Epi as the major concentration

a)      Infectious disease Epi –  Jobs like out break investigator/Vaccine related studies and Research in the various Infectious diseases are the main job profiles

b)      Chronic Disease Epi- A field with a lot of money here people look at the various causes and prevention strategies of chronic diseases like Heart diseases, diabetes etc

c)      Cancer Epi- This is also a nice field with a lot of funding esp from NIH

d)      MCH Epi – These look at the issues of women and child hood diseases these are the folks who came out with latest Hormone replacement therapy study which caused waves in the medical circles.( I am doing my thesis Inshallah in this subgroup looking at the Racial disparity In Down syndrome deaths)

e)      Aids Epi- A whole exciting ground with tons of research/ Prevention jobs world   wide

f)      Genetic Epi- Another well funded but highly specialized field

g)      Pharmaco Epi- A very well paying field in the pharmaceutical industry but needs cross discipline training

h)      Nutrition Epi- Looks at problems of malnutrition,

i)      Social Epidemiology- An interesting field that looks at social causes of diesease

2)      Health Policy/Health Law/Health Management- A highly paying but limited national as well as international field degrees required are an MPH/Phd in this field

3)      Environmental Health and Toxicology – Job openings range from sanitary/Health inspectors to Toxicologists

4)      Bio statistics- Bio statisticians are much valued and highly paid for they need to do the statistics work for all the above disciplines

Though there are a few jobs available that are inter disciplinary its wise to choose a concentration of interests acquire the required qualifications (MPH/MS/Phd or bachelors in Chemistry /biology – for toxicology /gentics) and then look for jobs

For additional information look at the job listings at

I would think womans health would need another sister to give health care to other sister. Midwives (there is a wonderful Midwifery school in Seattle) health depts and hospitals hire midwives and many insurances are now paying them.
Yes, I know 3 woman who are midwives.
And if you're up for it go the whole way to OB-GYN
as to working in other areas, I'm always reading the need for females in womans health care.
Midwifery is making a steady come back and birthing centers too as people are realizing having a baby is a natural thing not an illness.
The birthing center where my granddaughter was born, they allowed my son and her mother and sister in the room till they realized it was going to be a c-section.
It was a big, spacious private room where you have your baby and not have to go from labor room to delivery room to regualr room, all was done in one room.
I and my mother were in the room till the delivery time. The her mom, sis and hubby was in there.
Best wishes for your future.

Jazaka Allahu khair both of you. May Allah bless you for sharing your knowledge with me.

As for becoming a midwife, I have to say that I am not strong enough for that. I might faint.  ;D

My Background is in Mol. Bio. and have been working for about 4 years. I have been studying Multiple Schlerosis so I am interested in Epi of chronic diseases. I have been taking a number of Biostats classes and am about to start my fourth one now.

I love Biostats so far, and am wondering if I should get into it, but am intimidated by the thought of having to do a lot of calculus as we go on. Math is fine, Calculus is NOT. So I am actually thinking of doing as many Biostats classes as I can before getting into Cal and concentrating on Epi.
I am stuck, figuring out the concentration in Epi.

I want a well payed job but I also want a job that could make me happy by making a difference in ppls lives. I've been in research long enough to know that publications don't pay the bills nor do they make you feel like you have made a difference. It does in the beginning, I suppose but then it just feeds the ego.

So does Biostats require a good foundation in Calculus???
When it comes to Epi of chronic diseases, does it include cancer epi??
Another concern is the travelling... I would love to be able to but, I am single so it would mean doing it by myself. I keep wondering if I would be violating any major rules in Islam if I got into a career that would require travelling to other countries to conduct surveys or collect samples etc.

As far as paying bills go Epi is a long and hard road  :)

For the Fatwa, Iam sorry cant help you with that ,"you need to ask a knowledgeble local Imam" as the saying goes  :)

Or would one of the Folks on the board do a "fatwa cut n paste job" Iam sure we have seen more than our share of that  ;) (j/k)

What is a fatwa?
A decree? If so, who gives an Imaam the authority?

In the Name of Allah, All Merciful, Most Compassionate

Regarding people working in public health, you might consult with the Executive Director of Day One in Pasadena, CA, who may be able to provide you with useful information insh Allah. I don't know what happened to their web site, but the person in question has been blessed with some success in the field that you asked about. Alhamdolillah.

Salams Ember,

A fatwa is a non-binding legal opinion given in response to a legal problem by a qualified individual. It is akin to asking a standard lawyer his legal opinion on a course of action - ie, if I do this, will it violate the laws of the country I reside in? Similarly, an Islamic jurist will weigh up the matter at hand and indicate from his training whether the matter falls within the rules and guidelines his particular school of Islamic law has derived - generally not a very easy process.

On this matter the answer you recieve will unfortunately depend on which school of thought the person delivering it is - some mandate it is impermissable for a woman to leave the house save with a mahram male for example.

Eh, I'm sure there's something in the women section of this website :)
