| I'm taking this poetry class online and I was assigned to analyze the following poem by William Shakespeare. (I thought I'd share...) My mistress' eyes are nothing like the sun My mistress' eyes are nothing like the sun; Coral is far more red than her lips' red; If snow be white, why then her breasts are dun; If hairs be wires, black wires grow on her head. I have seen roses demasked red and white, But no such roses see I in her cheeks; And in some perfumes is there more delight Than in the breath that from my mistress reeks. I love to hear her speak, yet well I know That music hath a far more pleasing sound; I grant I never saw a goddess go: My mistress, when she walks, treads on the ground. And yet, by heaven, I think my love as rare As any she, belied with false compare. Well? What do you all think (especially you brother's)? Now I told my instructor Shakespeare seemed like a jerk but yet the last two lines are supposed to justify everything he said before. Do you think he was too harsh? |

| [slm] Oh my, I get stage fright posting first on a new thread! I just wanted to respond to your question. I actually like this poem. Shakespeare is pointing out that his love is not a perfect beauty (who is?) and yet it does not matter to him nor does it affect his love for her. Now it may seem a bit rich someone saying "hey, your ugly but I still like you" but I bet his mistress could have written a counter poem about him too. That wouldn't mean that they hate each other or find each other repulsive but that looks are only skin deep. His love goes beyond her appearance. Am I being hopelessly optimistic here? :-) |

| [slm] Shakespeare is an absolute genius. I think he mastered the English language better than anyone else, and that's super cool, considering that English is not an easy language to be genius in. As for the poem itself, I think it's more of a social message than actualy truth. Wasalaam. |
