Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullah,
I'm putting together a reading list for a group of US teachers who will be coming to Morocco in the summer to do research on Women in Morocco.  A lot of them stated in their applications that their main purpose in applying for the seminar was to learn about women in Islam and to clear up their misconceptions.
This article is quite long and rather technical, but I was asked by my boss if I thought it would be a good inclusion.  Personally I'm rather hesitant, but I'd really appreciate some input on this.

I wonder if I should go back and make it mem only?

Salams,

mem only?

Having read the article, it is technical, but not overly so in my opinion - I don't agree with all of it, but then again I can't remember the last time I agreed with anything :)

I think it is dependent on which aspect of the role accorded to women in Islam they're seeking to highlight - for example, this article deals with possible re-readings in terms of the modernist/reformist ideologies, however the net effect of these upon the current situation in Morocco may not be all that noticeable as it is more grounded in a mixture of the more traditional patriarchal readings mixed in with the base gender segregation that is prevalent there, with the major reforming force not being new readings of traditional texts, but rather social conditioning and cultural intermixing from the "West", which carries a different viewpoint of the role of the female in society and it's own segregation in gender roles (one could argue a more sexualised one than even the traditional one).

What other books/papers are you considering recommending to the group? That'll give a better idea of how a piece like this will fit into any potential pack, I'll give it a proper analysis then too hopefully.
