Understanding the Science of Hadith Have you ever wondered what makes Hadith, the sayings and actions, of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) so significant to our understanding of Islam? In pursuit of 'progress' some argue today, "Isn't Quran enough for our guidance?" In light of our current social and political context, understanding the rich history and the intricate mechanism behind the Hadith collection and classification is imperative. This seminar will bring new meaning to your studies in Hadith literature and its sciences (Uloom al-Hadith). It will examine the tools used by the noble collectors of Hadith in recording and preserving the most meticulous details of the life of Prophet Muhammd (peace be upon him). Date: March 27-28, 2004 Time: 12 pm - 5 pm (Please arrive by 11:30 am for registration) Place: University of Toronto at Mississauga (UTM), South Building, Lecture Hall 2080. Intro to the Science of Hadith: History, Methodology, and Critique - Shaikh Abdool Hamid, resident Scholar at the Islamic Institute of Toronto and Graduate of Madina University in Hadith Studies. In an era when Hadith and the highly sophisticated sciences associated with it, are often reduced to mere ancient narrations and fabrications, this course will help us appreciate the methodologies of narration, collection, authentication, categorization, and critique of Hadith. Seminar Outline: Meaning of Hadith, Sunnah, and basics of the science and structure of Hadith. Brief history and system of recording and compilation of Hadith. The methodology of Hadith scholars (Muhadditheen) in critiquing and accepting the Hadith narraters (Rijal al-hadith). Classification of Hadith and the related terminonologies (Mustalah al-Hadith).
