I'm sure there have been post on this but I have not read any. Why is a brother suppose to have a beard? Is it commanded? Recommended? Is there reasons stated for it? |

[slm] Sr, Azizah, there are several ahadith of the Prophet [saw] in which he commanded the believers to grow their beards. In some narrations, he stated it was part of fitrah [our natural state of being] to grow the beards. In some other narrations he also stated that men should grow beards to be different from the disbelievers (the Persians used to grow their moustaches and trim the beards). It is also well-known that the Prophet [saw] himself had a beard, and that some of his companions strove to keep their beards exactly like his. It is also established in Islam that the Prophet [saw] is our role model. What he says, we must obey. And the more we try to emulate and imitate him, the closer we become to Allah (swt). As for the exact ruling of the beard, whether it's mandatory or simply encouraged, is debatable among the scholars. Many scholars have said it's the former. Some have also argued that it's the latter. Allah knows best. Wassalamu alaikum wa rahmatullah |
