Homeschooling

slm,

I hope you are all in the best state of health and Iman.

Lately I have been thinking about my life, future, and my schooling. It seems like my highschool education (I'm in 9th Grade) is going by way too slow. Spending 2 months reading a book (Animal Farm which is no more than like 200 pages) and 2 weeks studying a 3 section short chapter with like 15 pages in all (World Cultures class) seems like a complete waste of time. Math class too. Another 2 or 3 weeks on a chapter there. So I thought a good way to learn could be homeschooling.

So to satisfy my curiosity, I looked it up on the net. Interesting stuff! I found one Islamic homeschooling program in particular that looked great. It seems like a great way to speed up my education and go at my own pace.

If I just order the same books my school is using and just read and study at my own pace, I feel it would be better for me.

But there could be some drawbacks. Of course I won't be in the whole school environment...but that doesn't seem too bad when I think about it. Too much mixing and unnessecary stuff. I mean, some teachers don't understand that as a Muslimah, it's not normal for me to go "finish the project at Phillip's house" or "be partners with the kid behind me" (but I think that is because when I am not around people I feel comfortable with, I clam up and can get sooo quiet that you wouldn't even know I was there) For example, Wallahi I don't think I have had a full conversation in my Math class ever! It is normal for me to go through the entire hour without saying a word. I think it is because I don't feel comfy with the people around me. Not my type of people.  :) But in my other classes, I LOVE to debate and disscuss and talk and learn. Okay now I'm getting off topic!

The point is, I'd rather just learn independently. I'd feel better in many ways.

Then there is the Dawah. Who knows when the next time my classmates will be able to talk to a Muslimah? I'm the only one so far. Should I stay in my highschool...or should I leave?

So, does anyone have any ideas? Suggestions? Advice? Or maybe someone has had an experience with homeschooling. Anything would be helpful. Write now I am undecided, but so far the benefits are outweighing the drawbacks.

If you do go for home school, make sure if you are planning to go to college to make sure you meet the requirements to go to the best school you can afford, because they play to the dumbies at colleges too, if you arent careful about the one you choose.

slm,

Well, I want to go to the University of Michigan. My bro goes there and he says that they do accept homeschooled students. I guess as long as I stick to the right curriculum and use the right books and make sure I do good on my ACT's, I'll be alright.

Salams,

I think you should get your brother to ask the MSA at the University of Michigan to get you in touch with some sisters who were homeschooled - there are certainly several that I know of. From what I heard, it can be kinda dull unless you ensure you have good social activities to fall back on. But those who have done it will know best :)

Homeschooled kids are not as cut off from the world as everyone would have it seem. Really it depends on what kind of person you are to begin with, if you need people constantly around you to help you learn, then homeschool would probably not be the best option, but if you are good at teaching your self then perhaps homeschool is for you. People emphasize socialization too much when discussing homeschooling. Usually the socialization they are referring to ,is in a narrow sense of . They should be more focused on their kids character, not whether he/she is around people the same age as him/her.

Most  homeschoolers register with the state officially. So you would need your parents to do that for you. Most Universities welcome homeschoolers. I know many homeschooled kids who are in college and are only 14. Do they have socialization issues? No not really because the homeschool exposes you to people of different ages so many people have friends who are 6 to 10 years older then them.
