[slm] ok, so does anybody read non-ethnic fiction? I used to read a lot of Jane Austen (I know, I know, pretty girly) but I thought her satirical take on relationships was kinda funny. I also liked "1984": a little graphic, but it was assigned in high school. The "double think" concept reminded me of some countries, and some religions, that have followers who beileve right is wrong and wrong is right, and conveniently forget the past very quickly. that's just a couple off the top of my head ma'a salaama |

salam, Can always count on a fiction thread to draw me out of the realm of lurkwood ^_^. I started off as a reluctant reader of Jane Austen when I friend of mine insisted I read 'Pride and Prejudice'. I gave in because I thought it's one of the those classics that I should at least familiarise myself with..Didn't think I would enjoy it. It wasn't what I expected it to be...I loved it and after that I couldn't get enough of Jane Austen. I have read all her novels with the exception of 'Northanger Abbey' as well. 1984 is very depressing.. Unfortunately I have had so little time to read for pleasure this year..the last book of fiction I have read was 'The Little Prince' by Antoine De Saint-Exupery. I've been wanting to read this book for ages..finally made the time to read it a few weeks ago. Brilliant. So simple yet very profound. I cried so much towards the end. I will leave with an excerpt from the Little Prince ..I found myself nodding when reading this, thinking.. yes..how many times have I experienced this before.. "I have serious reason to believe that the little prince's planet of origin was the asteroid known as B-612. This asteroid has only been observed once through a telescope by a Turkish astonomer in 1909. At the time he organised a great demonstration of his discovery at an International Astronomical Congress. But because of his Turkish attire nobody believed him. Grown-ups are like that. Fortunately for the reputation of Asteroid B-612, however, a Turkish dictator imposed European costume upon his subjects under pain of death. So the astronomer repeated his demonstration in 1920 dressed in an elegant suit. And this time, everbody was convinced." salam, merimda |
