Teachable Moments

Any teachers on board? Care to share your teachable moments? ^_^

Was teaching a unit on Ancient Egypt recently... One class we were discussing the evolution of writing in Ancient Egypt. I explained to my students how Hieroglyphics developed into a form of writing known as hieratic and then demotic..
Throughout the lesson instead of demotic I was saying demonic..I even wrote demonic on the board..lol. I didn't realise until I did a review with the class  a few days later when the students kept saying demonic.

In subsequent classes I could not emphasis enough... it's demotic not demonic..it's not a satanic form of writing..

'It's demotic not demonic' is now an inside joke..

nice to hear that the practictum is going so well  ;)

i had moments when i wanted to strangle my students
who were first year iam-so-rich dentistry students.
they were dispensing tritium (radioactive stuff) in the
regular garbage, over their benches, while enjoying
a muffin and coffee from Tim's.

take care

LOLLLLLLLL hahahaha demonic.  That's cute, but just as long as you caught the mistake before they did.

Well the funniest thing that happened in my TA-ing career was that as spring approached last year, the students got louder and louder and LOUDER.  Not that I mind, really...I don't like silent classrooms.  Cellphones kept going off, it was a pretty demonic situation in itself.  So I cat-called (yeah haven't ever done that before in public, it was fun), and I asked them all to shut up, turn off their cellphones, and pay attention.  I told them that the next person who's cellphone rang would have to help me make the review sheet for the semester.  Anyway, so, then a student asked me a question, and I began explaining it on the board, and all of a sudden!!!! A PHONE RANG.  So I'm like "Man you guys!!! Seriously!!!!!"  It kept ringing and ringing.  Then this one kid goes..."Err....Sarah....I think it's yours."

The whole class ERUPTED with laughter.  It was REALLY embarrassing, especially considering that no one ever calls me, I use that (demonic) machine as a watch.

Wasalaam.

I teach children with ld, ebd, and adhd, so i am still waiting for a moment to teach! just playing *smile*....no mashAllah the other day we where talking about tone, and how when you say a poem in two different tones, you get two different meanings. Well, they weren't getting it, so my co-teacher asked them what their favorite songs were in order to give them an example. One kid looks at me and says, brush ur shoulder off, so i was like what? so i look on my shoulder and wonder if i have chalk on there, and i try to brush it off, they all start laughing and i am like what? they are like thats the name of the song; brush ur shoulder off....ok, i don't listen to music...so i didn't know....makes me wonder what kinda song that is........

That's all sweet.  My teachable moments aren't that sweet.  I teach 10-13 yr old boys and they are really good, masha-Allah....in the beginning.  They were respectful and listened and learned the lessons.  Then one of the teachers had twins and couldn't teach anymore.  So I ended up taking her students.  Only 8 girls compared to 12 boys.  Since my schedule wouldn't permit a separate time, I had to go co-ed.  BIG mistake.

The girls are ladies, masha-Allah, very proud of them.  The boys are now boys and I keep telling myself, boys will be boys...then i say....NOT MY BOYS!!!  They were so loud one day, I just walked out on the class.  Before I shut the door, I turned around and said to them, when I come back tomorrow, I want a one page essay of why you boys were so disrespectful and what Islam teaches about behavior.

The following day, you could hear a pin drop. And all of the essays were apologies and that they promise not to do that again.  Tested them for a whole month and gave them a party.  Now once in a whie, they'll get roudy, but atleast now they'll listen when I tell them to quiet down.  8)

Ma-assalama....
