Ok so u may be like some who read some heavy muslim poetry and are like.. what the ...??? so i was reading this in a book and thought this would help us all out ;):


Metaphors & Symbols

"cup" = refers to one's body and mind
"nightingale" = represents the soul
"rose" = the perfect beauty of God
"rosegarden" = paradise
"breeze" = God's life-giving breath
"winter" = a soul separated from God
"getting drunk" = losing oneself in divine love
"spring" = union, resurrection and rebirth
"signs of spring" = the soul's inner awakening
"hangover" = lingering effects of love
"rising sun" = illumination of divine knowledge
"festival of color" = beauty of the soul's awakening
"wine" = divine love that intoxicates the soul
"warm rain" = pouring down of God's grace
"shams" = power of grace that awakens the truth within us, inner sunrise, one's own soul and its awakening
"saaqi" "cupbearer" or "maiden" = grace-bestowing aspect of God
"reed" = human separated from its source, the Beloved

While the list is useful, most poets have a 'cusomized' meaning for their usage of these words. Not all of them have same meanings.
