I didn't post about this cause i didn't know how good it would be. But we watched it and I really thought it was an excellent documentary and very interesting. I think it's going to be three parts over three nights. It's about the stories of people who end up coming to the US. Tonight's episode had a nigerian family, a palestinian girl, & a dominican baseball player. It showed the struggle, poverty and odds they went through to finally come to the US. And in the US it turned out much differently than they would have hoped. They also showed quite a bit about life in Palestine under the occupation and really humanized what was going on there. I thought that was brave of the producers cause no doubt they got tons of calls and complaints about them showing what really happens on the "palestine side".

PBS usually replays stuff so check out your local stations :) Gosh what would we do without PBS educating people!!  Anywayz, here's the show's webpage: http://www.pbs.org/independentlens/newamericans/

Yeah, I accidentally came across the show as I changed the channel from the knick game last night ;)

It wasn't too bad..yeh i like the palestinian piece...I also thought it was brave, but then again PBS sometimes 'hooks it up'. Public TV is great isnt it.

It was a good potrayal of the difficult times people have to go through to settle down esp the financial and health struggles balanced with the semblance of family life and the commitments back home

I could almost relate to it.....

Alhamdullilah for all the b lessings...................

I think the first episode was the best. It just seemed happier with people setting out from their homelands to look for their dreams. I'm amazed they covered those people for so many years. I mean before they moved, before their marriages, and then after some had little babies that got so big! It must have been at least 3-5 years.

I think they showed alot of interesting things. I'm actually surprised to see them on TV. Like they showed the palestinian girl and her husband crying and upset on sept 11 and then later showed how the arab american center where he worked at was burned down because of arson. How they cried when their friend in Palestine hung himself and the husband was like 'there's nothing there for them'. And how they had the demonstration for palestine and he told the kids not to burn the american flag because it wouldn't serve their cause at all and then it cuts to the evening news where the headline story is 'palestinian kids burn flag at demonstration'!!! i'm glad they showed that. The sad thing is that they showed the guy not fasting, drinking and when he was asked if he believed in God he refused to answer. Too bad :( it was a good dawah opportunity.

The thing is at the end...did any of them find the happiness or fulfill the dreams they were looking for? It doesn't seem like it... pretty sad.. but very realistic...

ps the desi guy!!! ARGH couldn't they find one less chauvenistic and annoying
