My mother is going to have a pacemaker put in soon.  The
cardiologist explains that it is a minor procedure, and talks
matter-of-fact about it .  He said that no major life style
adjustment is required.  I worry that he is oversimplifying
things.  Anyone here who knows someone who had a
pacemaker put in?  How was that experience for them?

Jazakum Allah khair.  :-)

Take care

The Doctor is right, but he should have been less abrupt with the explanation. Actually, your Mother should feel better with the pacer because it will be aiding her heart to beat at a more normal "pace" than before. She may experience a renewed interest in activities that were too much for her physically. Her heart will be pumping more oxygenated blood to her brain because of the regular rhythm she will most likely have, and her spirits and memory may improve, also.
Hope this little bit helps you understand, and In'Shallah your Mother has improved health!

As-salaam aleikum Mona
I don't know if her doc told her this but I'm sure he/she did. She should be aware that being in certain areas may make her pacemaker a little wierd. Like being around electrical objects, car engine, etc. Oh and it's VERY important that she knows she canNOT get an MRI if she needs one. Other than that pacemakers are OK. Salaams,

Way too simple... when my dad had it fitted had to be careful on a number of things. From carrying his medical card all the time and saying that he had a pacemaker fitted so he can't go through certain airport chefking machines.
Not go near Microwaves and a couple of other things.

IM me and I can let you know some personal issues...

Salaams,

Hanif

My grandfather had a pacemaker put in recently. Mashallah, he recovered quite well, although was bit weak obviously after the op for few weeks.

Once your mother has the pacemaker put in, she'll have to be careful around electromagnetic things. Like Brother Hanif mentioned, the airport security machine, she wont be able to go through it.  But just explain the situation and they'll do a manual check instead.
Also, I dont know if your mother uses a mobile (I think you call them cell phone in the States?), but if she does: careful to not hold it near left area of chest, i.e. where the heart is, otherwise it may set off the pacemaker.  My grandfather uses the mobile, but on his right side, although we had to remind him a few times to begin with!

I know its worrying when loved ones have operations or medical things, but Inshallah it will be fine. 8)  My grandfather mowed the whole lawn and walked to the mosque (20 minutes away) a few days after the operation!  []
Hope that helps.  Good luck!
