anyone from houston?

as salaamu alaykum wa rahmatullah,

I hope you all are doing well insha'Allah :)  I am going to be moving to Houston, TX in the summer, insha'Allah, so I was hoping that those of you from Houston could tell me a little about it and answer some questions for me. I'm moving from upstate NY, where I was born and raised, so I am not really sure what a large Muslim community in an urban setting is like.

I am especially interested in finding out more about the Sugarland and Clearlake areas. How involved are sisters in the masajid? Are they able to participate in the classes? What kind of classes are available? Is the community diverse? Is there one particular mindset that dominates the masjid or the community? Is one area more sister-friendly than the other?

I really appreciate any answers you can give me.. Jazakum Allahu khayran :)

ahhhhhhhhh Houston!!!!!!
I lived in Houston when my sons were little.
Their father is from Pasadena (just outside Houston)
When I was there we use to live off the southwest freeway.
I can't answer your questions as to the islamic community but I do have some suggestions to help you adjust to your soon to be new home.
I hear it has changed a lot since the 80's

#1) HUMIDITY............. Begin your transition now   :o
Begin by going (in hijab) into a sauna so as when you get down there you'll be use to it  :D

#2) Racing.............. Head out on a country road and drive as fast as you can, now if you can get a policeman to chase you this would be most helpful.
In Houston     610 loop  =  legalized racing.
I now hear they built another loop outside the old 610 loop,  this is soooo cool as that is twice the fun   ;D

Can you fix a stetson (cowboy hat) over top of your Hijab???     :)

Ask Abu Hamza about the area (we use to call)  called the spegetti bowl   8)
I don't think I had ever seen so much concret as I seen in Houston.

Thunderstorms, humidity and traffic I think will be your biggest adjustment
OHHHHHHH and begin learning your Texas slang, I have an old email I'll forward to you.
But start learning  YA'ALL  :D
Woooosssshed  = wished
yont'tu  = Do you want to?

And yes orange and white ARE the state color, that is why all those signs, cones and such are all over the freeways. I know in most states they are caution and men at work colors, but in Texas they are actually the state color.

Learn to like Mexican food  :P

Ohhh,  and cockeroaches are not a sign of being dirty, they are cherished pets down south.  ::)
At the pet stores they sell the cutest little tiny collars and leashes  :D
Oh and the giant ones, they make the most wonderful skateboards, seriously  :-/

on the board from houston.  anyone ??

se7en, i am sure things there are not so bad. on the positive side, you won't have to use your snow boots again.  yay!

and maybe you can start your own sister group at the masjid, if there aren't ones there already.  then you can teach them NYC slang.   ;D

take care
wassalam

as salaamu alaykum,

from my visit, I know people in the south tend to just do things differently..  for example, I know this is a generalization, but y'all are so CHILL.  I think it's the heat that makes everyone seem so laid back and relaxed, and speak at the pace you do  :P

thanx for the posts guys, hehehe :)

salaam :)

I dunno if this is true but it seems to me that in a lot of countries the people in the south are laid back and very nice and welcoming and sort of old fashioned... I know it's true here in Morocco, and I think also in the south of Spain and France, definitely in the U.S. (except where the civil rights movement didn't "take" and with the exception of certain individuals some of whom were (not) elected US prez). What is it about the south?  You really think it could be the heat?  I wonder if it's reversed in the Southern Hemisphere :D

Yes and they seem to talk and do things slower. As in a more relaxed pace.
But talk about warm and welcoming, at least it was 20 years ago.
ugggggggggggg I am begining to feel sooooo old  ::)

At a meeting at work a week ago, I learned how Texans say, "All of you".  The correct way is, "All, y'all".    :-/
