Salaam

I am new to your site. You have a beautiful site here, mashallah.  It is very well designed and has interesting topics.  I especially like when you enter the site and the scenery lets you know that you are in a place of peace and tranquility.

Well done.

Anyway this is just a short one to say salaam!

Ummm.... this is my first time posting to a website board.  I have a couple of questions: :-[

1.I noticed from viewing some of your discussions that most people are very concerned about "banned topics".  I have looked in the help guide, but I havent been able to discover what these banned topics are (maybe I'm not looking in right place?). Could anyone advise me on this, so I dont slip up.  ???

2. Sorry, if this sounds stupid to those who know but what does "ahlan wa sahlan" mean?

Thanks for your time.

Salam,

1. Look at the city constitution above, this is the relevant bit methinks:
No prolonged arguments about any issues that even the scholars of Islam over the centuries have not come to a consensus on! This includes controversial issues (i.e. meat, music, Mawlid, the Taliban, voting, Madhabs, bashing scholars, suicide bombings, OBL, 9/11, Niqab, sunni/shia/sufi/salafi/jamaat/whatever debates).
2. Welcome  :)

fi aman Allah,

Thanks for the welcome guys! ;-)

I was just having a little look around your site here.  It is much bigger than I first thought.  :o  I think the list of Kewl Muslims is great and has so many sites!

Also I read something about Smurfs?!  :D  What was the deal with that anyway? How come Smurfette was the only girl? Something in the water maybe?  And what was the baddie called again? Gargamel or something? Ah, brings back memories.

Errrr..... just realised I am warbling on about little blue cartoon characters.  Apologies!

Welcome to the board and enjoy your stay, insha'Allah.  How about a lil introduction? ???
Re: Salaam
Nadeem

[slm]

Introduction, eh? Errr..... well, lets see. I'm from the UK.  I'm in my 20's.  I used to watch CHIPS and The Incredible Hulk when i was little :) (should give you a clue as to which end of 20s I'm at!).

Uhhh, what else? Well, I was born into a Muslim family.  So I've always been Muslim, but I think there's a difference between, when you are just born into a religion or philosophy of life, and when you actually start to ask questions of yourself and what you actually believe in.  It is only recently (past few months) that I've become increasingly committed to my duties as a Muslim.

Ever since this realisation, I've been really hungry for as much knowledge on Islam as I can possibly take in.  So I hit the Net, came across this site, and here I am.

So thats about it really.  One thing I have found on the Net there is alot of conflicting advice on pretty much everything including Islam, so I am searching for a better understanding of the truth, inshallah.  Sadly there is a lot of nasty bitter and untrue stuff about Islam on the Net aswell. :(  Then there are other sites, like this one mashallah, which are beautiful constructed, and have interesting discussions and resources, and I'm glad that Allah has guided me to it.  :)

Okay, I think that is more than introduction, more like thesis, so I will end now.  []

Okay so I don't remember CHIPS at all, so either the Atlantic is a bigger divide than I previously assumed, or you're on the other end of the 20s :)

:D Thank you for not breaking my jaw, sister yumna!  I think there's a good possibility I'm not the same Nadeem as the one in your class. ;D But thanks for the warning. Maybe this boy has done stuff to others aswell, hope I dont have a crazy mob after me!  :o

Sister JustOne, ChiPs was an American programme about Highway Patrol Cops who rode about on motorbikes.  There was a blonde one and a South American one (but of course when you're little I thought he was Middle Eastern/Indian subcontinent person, so you can identify more :D).  It was set in the..... errrr...... okay you got me  ;D I guess I am in the opposite end of the 20's.  By the way, sister JustOne, sprechen sie Deutsch? Sehr gut!

To others who have welcomed, thanks and wa salam.

I just discovered the articles section of the website today. Duh!
This site has so many sections. :) The articles are very good.  I liked the one by Imran Khan.  Is that Imran Khan the cricketer, or is it some next man?  Also the Arabic words bit is really useful also.

Re: Salaam

Brothers and Sisters, its seems we have a lot of 80s shows fans in the house! :D

Guys, MacGuyver was cool, and always very modest:
"thenkyou macGuyver for saving our vee-lij"
"Don't thank me. Thank the moon's gravitational pull."  :-/

But c'mon, A-team was much better.  They were always trapped in some warehouse with nothing but two paperclips and a metal pipe, and they always built something like ED209.  Totally believable, peeple!

Columbo, yeah okay he always was very clever how he outfoxed them, but that coat, seriously tho.  That is so "yardie" or FOB-y(for the American peeps).  Why didnt he ever get a new one? :-/

Now Airwolf was cool, helicopter superstar.  Of course it was kind of in the genre KnightRider (pure classic) that one.  Now another Knightrider copy was StreetHawk.  Now that was rubbish!

Errr.... in conclusion what these programmes can teach us is that errrr..... even when you think its all over, using your God-given intellect and knowledge, can give you the strength and resources to get you out of adverse situations.

It also teaches us that cars that talk and can do turbo-boost are way cool!  :P

OMG Knightrider?!!!!!

You don't understand how much I loved him.  I used to wish he was my chachoo (uncle).  Seriously.  Wouldn't it be cool to have a chachoo like knight rider?

My brother (in addition to constantly imitating Amitabh from Shahenshah) used to be able to copy the theme song of Knightrider perfectly...does anyone remember it?  This was way back when I was like 4.  (The reason I remember my age is because after 4/5 we moved to a different country, and I distinctly remember the guava tree's presence in these memories) ... OMG I have to download the theme song now.

Okay next piece of nostalgia: TRANSFORMERS (more than meets the eye).

Oh and is your name really Nadeem?  You sound (type) suspiciously like this guy I know.  (lol)

Funny story….

When I first came to America, I was FOB, but not on a banana boat.  I really don’t remember, but then again I don’t remember any of my childhood up til 7 yrs.  Anyways, I was 8 yrs old when I took ESL.  I loved watching t.v. and whatever I could watch, I watched.  One of my favorite shows was The Flinstones.  So on the way to class, I was singing the theme song…

Flinstones.  Meet the Flinstones.  Da da da da family.  From the town of bedrock, da da da history.  Da da  da from the family down the street.  Da da da meet.  When you’re with the Flinstones have a yaba daba doo time.  A yaba daba doo time.  You’ll have a great old time.  (then Fred pulls on a string and the bird screams and shouts (now this is as soon as I walk in to the classroom.))

EEEEE----YABA DABA DOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

Yeap, I was put in the corner as soon as I was done.  Teacher yelled at me as if I was disturbing the class.  Like the only person that was in there was her.  Sheese!  Give a FOB a break.  I’m learning here.

From then on, I never liked her.  So I learned English real fast by watching Sesame Street and Mr. Roger’s neighborhood.  And was out of that class in no time.

;D Ohmigosh! I forgot about T-Bag and the T-Room! Thanks for the links!

By the way, Sister tree, you were asking about London, well I'm staying in West London (near the Queen :))

What do I like about London? Hmm, well lets see...

I guess what I like about London is its lively, its always open, has great transport network (in terms of places it reaches but if you want to get somewhere on time, then not so good! :D), I have many friends here, and theres people from all over the world here, you'll probably find every single nationality.  The different boroughs of London are very diverse, and vary greatly in ethnicity, society, and wealth.

Oh and of course, another good thing about London is amid the sprawling mass of concrete and tarmac...      Hyde Park.  A huge green space of land (about 600 acres) owned by the Queen (I think) but open to all.  It has a lake in which people go boating, sailing, some brave people even swim in it(!) Also famous for Speakers Corner an area of the Park where people can exercise their freedom of speech.  People normally stand on soapboxes and can talk about any controversial topic they like : politics, religion, anything!

On the down side, the things that sometimes put people off living in London: its very expensive, very noisy, very busy, polluted, traffic is atrocious, and theres no real sense of community spirit (youre a bit anonymous and people arent always too helpful).

But other than that its great!

:)

I really like to visit London...we used to go there when we were wee to visit family.  But i don't think i could ever live there.  I just wanted to know what you thought of it, seeing as you live there.  I have friends who moved there, and apart from it being very expensive (travelling and housing  :o) they're quite lonely and isolated, because it's not as easy to meet people, and when you do, it's not as easy to visit them cos travelling takes too long!  I always find it funny that even though i live outside london i see them just as much, if not more, as they see each other living in the same city!

But my husband, who finishes his masters this summer insha'allah, keeps threatening to find a job in London so we'd have to move there...he's a London newbie, so i think he's been seduced by the bright lights of the big city  ;D

I'm looking forward to going to seeing the extension to the British Museum though...have you been?  also, have you been  to Ar-Rum in Clerkenwell Road?  i've been meaning to go, but never get the chance when i'm there, and i don't yet know anyone who's been.  it's nice to visit cos there are so many things to do, see and eat  :D

As for Dungeons&Dragons...quality cartoon. dogtanian was one of those really strange cartoons that was strange but addictive.  do any of you remember maid marion and her merry men? button moon?? Terrahawks...that was one freaky programme  :o
anyway, i could go on and on....maybe i watched too much tv when i was a kid?!?!?

As Salaamu Alaikum brother!

I too am new to this site. I've visited a few times before and anonymously posted messages. All the love here and the way that topics turn into incredible discussions like these made me become a member. ;D

Yes, I was a fan of the Smurfs, ThunderCats, and Night Rider, but come on...McGuyver was the king of making something out of nothing. I recall an episode where he made a bomb out of a Wrigley's chewing gum wrapper and a paper clip!!! ::)

But does anyone remember that cartoon Sport Billy or Desmonds??? I loved Desmond's!!! But no one that I know remembers it. They think that I'm making it up. Someone please say that you remember it.
