Hello my name is Mohammed. I am a new member and I came here to get help (insha'Allah). There are many problems I have in my life, however, I chose this board because many people are the same as me. I am younger though. I have problems with school and I succeed in some, fail in others. I want to become a doctor but I am in the 11th grade so far. (Doing horrible) I think I do horrible because I hardly ever open my books at home, and basically don't care till' the 12th grade. I need tips and helps from you people, your all so helpful. What should I do? Get organized? Ask help? I really don't know. My subjects are (Chemistry, Biology, English, and Computers) I am doing well in Computers and in Bio but the other two are not as good. Any helpful hints? The reason my name on this board is "ForS" it's meant to say, "Failure or Succesful" = ForS. Besides problems in school, I need help in life, and my religion. I'm not as religious as you think I am. The reason is, I never cared in my life till now, and it just struck me in my brain. Sorry if I bothered you. Man I am doing horrible. To tell you the honest truth is that, I don't know much about my religion except Salah' (Praying). That's about it. Sometimes I read the quran and the next day I am doing something harram. Yes this is bad, but I am telling you the truth. I want to become a better person inside the only way it will get to me is motivation. I have none right now, nothing motivates me to do better but myself along with my brain. If you were to tell me stories that can motivate me I would be happy to read about them. Without motivation I could care less. Wow, I am really annoying, but I am just asking for help if you will. My parents are mad at me for not doing well in school, but I know that is there job to help me out. However, my parents are not Canadians as I am, they came from other places and attended Universities there. They do not know how hard Canadian schools are. 11th grade feels like the first year of University. (Wallah). Let me become an "S" instead of an "F" if you can help me. If not I will find my way as I usually do. Why does life have to be a test? Help me become a better muslim and a better student. I'm in the mood for motivation, yet I have none. Ok that's all I have to say, and this is my first post. (A first post with a problem) Sorry for bothering you again. Your brother in Islam.

[slm] young brother Mohammed, welcome  :) I would give you a Bebzi, but my smilies show Ramadan Mubarak instead of a Bebzi.

Jannah, next time you revise the smilies, please put a chocolate bar, and a hot chocolate drink.

motivation for success!

why have you been sent here, in this world, brother?

because Allah (swt) loves you and wants to say to the angels, "this is my servant whom I sent into this world, and gave him choices, and he chose to be useful yet

obedient to me", and then He will grant you eternal bliss.

So, you have been given many blessings: can you count them?

1. you were made a human with choices, the highest of Allah's creations. Now it is up to you to rise, or to fall.
2. you were given loving and educated parents who value education, and want the best for you.
3. you are in a country where basic education is free, and you can compete on merit.
4. you have a chance of University education if you do good, and University education can open up your mind.
5. you have subjects some of which that you find interesting
6. you have already an aim, to become a doctor.

that is a very worthy profession.
can you count more blessings .....

If you do not make something of yourself, you will lead a miserable life, and will have to answer why you wasted the opportunities given to you. Do you there are millions who would give anything to be in your shoes.

So, you tell us do you want to be someone who is pitied or ridiculed, is a drain on society, and will face the harsh questioning on the Day of Judgment, or do you want to be someone who is useful, and does good, and is respected and in the Hereafter attains the highest award of Allah's pleasure?

Life is getting harder everywhere, Mohammed, and it is good that it is hard, or we will become complacent and lazy, and Satan will conquer us, and in the Hereafter we will be the losers.

try to develop an interest in the subjects you are studying.
and you have to make a time schedule for your studies. Depends on the courses you have to cover, the difficult bits will take more time. and also reserve time for revisions.
and you have to tell yourself that you want to succeed in this world and in the Hereafter.
Sometimes you will have to be stern with yourself, but it will pay off.
you don't have to be a dry bookworm, you can joke and laugh.

but don't waste time.

let us see you list your subjects, chapters, and your time schedule.

Something like

xx:yy wake up, wudu, fajr, dhikr
aa:bb - cc:dd study subject Chemistry, Chapter __-___
     breakfast
school
...........
...........

pp:qq dinner, zuhr
...........
..........

etc.

also put time in for rest, play, walks

let us see your schedule. :)
and remember, all great persons have achieved greatness through hard work.

Brother, I am also new to this board, so welcome from one newbie to another. ;-)

As regards to your problems:

It sounds as if you are very stressed in particular about your school work.  I think probably the best thing would be to make a manageable study plan, as  Br. Timbuktu suggested.
You say  "I don't know much about my religion except Salah' ".  Well that is an excellent start!
If you plan your day, so as to wake up for Fajr, you can have a drink or some breakfast, and start on your work.
Fajr prayer will allow you to gather yourself and insha'allah, start off with a calm head.
If you do a couple of hours, then take a break for a bit.  Then start work again perhaps changing the subject or topic you are looking at.
By Dhur/Zuhr time you will inshallah be feeling much better, as you will have done few hours work, and it is only lunchtime!

This is assuming you are off from school, like on a weekend, or on a study leave or something.  If you are school during the day, then maybe you could do Fajr, and then just do 30-45 mins before going to school.  Inshallah this will give you greater peace for the rest of the day knowing that you have at least done some work already.

In any case, you seem very self critical.  I am often like that although I try not to be.  Try not to think in terms of ForS (Failure or Success) in terms of your school work.  Just try the best you can, and put your faith in Allah.  If you are constantly worrying then you will find it difficult to do your best.  Studies are always showing that stress inhibits our ability to tackle problems effectively, so take some time out aswell, to have some fun.  I dont know if you play sports or have any other interests.  Build these into your plan for the day.

I hope all goes well for you, Inshallah.

Oh Mohammed, I just thought of something else I would share with you, something I hope will cheer you up.

I dont know if you are from England, but there is an Asian (that means people from the Indian sub-contintent in the UK) comedy sketch show called Goodness Gracious Me on TV.  Sometimes it is quite funny, although sometimes bit weird.

Anyway there is one that made me laugh and is quite good at illustrating the pressure parents put their kids under with regards to school work.  I cant remember it exactly but I think it goes something like this.  Apologies to those who've already seen/heard it:

"(Man and Woman standing in kitchen discussing their son's performance at school)

Man:   This boy never listens to anything I say.  Look at these grades!
Woman: What do you mean, ji? He has got good grades.
Man:   Good?! You call this good?  I remember when he did his GCSEs (16+ exams) exactly the same story!
Woman: But he got 6 A's and 3 B's for his GCSE's.
Man:   B? What is a B? How can my son get a B? Mr Sinha's son got all A's!  3 B's! (makes a sound of disgust)
Woman: But look at his A-Level results (18+ exams).  He did 5 A-Levels. Most only do 3. And he got all A's!
Man: A's? Huh! Mr Patel's son got A stars (like A+)! Why does my son get A's when others are getting A stars.
Woman: But he's got into Cambridge University to do Bachelors Degree in Medicine.
Man: Bachelors? Why is he not doing PhD (doctorate degree)? How can I hold my head up in the community? Mr Khan's son is doing PhD! Why is my son not doing PhD? Huh? Tell me!
Woman: Uff! Maybe because....(camera pans round to little kid sitting on worktop, swinging his legs sucking on a lollipop)... he's only 5!"

Well, it just goes to show, no matter how goods your grades get, parents are sometimes never happy!  :P

Ahlan Mohamed,

Very good introuduction.  Very HONEST!  I like that a lot.

Well, there are so many young people here with good ideas who can help you.  And the old too.  As an older person, I would say that you are on the right track if you already know that you need to correct yourself both religiously and academically.  You need to focus on your goals.  Not easy but with discipline and motitvation, you will make it.

Welcome to the board which is a family that cares a lot.

Shukran.

Welcome bro Mohammed, MashaAllaah that really was a nicely put intro.

What drew me to your post was that I had exactly the same subjects as you in school...and the same pressure. InshaAllaah khair....do take into account your natural aptitude and inclinations before you choose a career.

And I also want to say that there's a lot of barakaaat in parental advice, so do listen to what they hv to say....sometimes they know us better at this stage than we do ourselves.

All the best and many many duas....

[slm],

Boy you remind me of my youth(which was about four years ago{My highschool years}  ::)). I used to be verry bad in highschool yet I was only good in the subjects I liked. Surprisingly enough I find College much (and I mean much) more easier than high school. Maybe because of a larger variety of subjects.

As for your religious state, I'd highly recommend Sh. Hamza Yusuf's "The poor man's book of assistance". Its almost as if it was done especially for your type of problem :)

Anyhowz just make isthighfar for what you do and as long as you hold on to your salah, I think you are better off than a lot of people.  :P

P.S the fact that you're aware of your situation is a good sign in it self :)

Thanks for helping me out guys and gals (Should I say Gals?). You've all been helpful and cheered me up as well. Especially the joke Nadeem said. I had a large smile on my face when I read your replies. Alhumdillah, thank you! I also created a time table and got really really really organized. Now I actually like school..... eh (I never thought of that but...  ;) I also tried to look for the book, "The Poor Man's Assistance" but I couldn't find it (I will try inshAllah). Even though, I had a rough week while posting, everything is clear and in my mind as well - except for "bebsi" as the way some people say it. Funny  :P   However, imagine a person saying, "Bark your car in the Barking lot?" I mean the B's = P's ....... ahaha or something like, "Bass me Beanut Butter Blease" .... oh great I am making jokes, see how happy I am  :) .... Allah Hafiz

Welcome Brother and enjoy.  This is a good place to help you with your problems.  More people can make du’a for you.  As for your struggle…..

Allah (Subhana-Ta'ala) Most High said, a servant who advances towards Me by a hand’s breadth, I advance towards him by an arm’s length. And if he advances towards Me by an arm’s length, I advance towards him by the span of outstretched arms. And if he comes to Me walking, I go to him running. (Related by al-Bukhari according to Anas).

Call me a professional student.  I’ve been going to school for ….ever and have taken probably a year of break added all together.  I take a class here and there because I work full time.  Still trying to get my Masters in Medicine.  Insha-Allah, become a Pediatrician before 40.  I’ve got a long ways, but I’ve got time, Allah willing.

Creating a schedule is one thing cause I did that, following it is another.  Try really hard to stick with that schedule and you have plenty of time to play when you’re not studying.  Don’t study so hard that you feel like it’s too much later and then hate it.  Because once you hate it, the motivation is gone and hard to get back.  Take it easy, but stay focus.   Stay away from caffeine, though a Bebzi here and there won’t hurt.  The best is Vitamin C like orange juice.  Take 5 minute breaks to peep your head out the window or just lay there, on your study sessions cause the more you take the harder it is to get back on track.  Outlines of your material helps A LOT!  That way you don’t get overwhelmed by the material.  Some of the stuff that’s in your book really isn’t that important to know, it’s just FYI.  Just make sure you know what the important stuff is.

Also in your 5 minute break, you can pray sunnah.  For some reason, I find it much easier to concentrate when I have wudhu.  Don’t stay up too late and always wake up for Fajr.  Once you pray Fajr, the day goes by nicely.  Get sufficient sleep, not too much, not too little.  For some people it varies.  I need at least 8, some I know only need 3, and others need 10.  Your body will let you know when it’s good.

Other than that, try to have fun with your subjects and take it easy but don’t slack or procrastinate.  Hope this helps.

Ma-assalamah…..
