fighting the nafs

When I lived in a big city, I used to walk everywhere. Sometimes, I walked home from work. I used to walk twenty blocks downtown and then around seven long city blocks East. It was interesting because it was in a big, diverse city before this country became so turmoiled.

It also kept me thin.

Those days are simply gone. When I moved out west, I bought a car, and since then, I have not walked any great distance in this country, and I have not been able to get rid of my car either.

The result is not going to be unpredictable.

I don't have people to play sports with. I intend to study fighting, but I have to get into shape before I can do that properly. However, I was never this out of shape before in my life, so I'm not sure how to reverse the process.

If you do, let me know insh Allah!

Barak Allahu fikum.

It sounds so familiar... I used to walk everywhere when I was going to school too. To the bus stop.. to classes.. all around campus.. back home. I *never* gained weight no matter what i ate!!

Then I started working where you basically drive to work, sit there for 8 hours... drive back home and are so tired you basically just plop on the couch and the next day starts again. Plus as you get older I'm sure your metabolism slows down too.

The only thing to do is make lifestyle changes to make up for the differences. If I were working now too I'd make sure to eat extremely light and healthy foods all the time. And make sure to add exercise as part of my life at least 3-5 times a week.

The title is a bit "misleading" but anyhow welcome to the club, lol. I recommend that if you eat out, start visiting those vegan restaurants like "fresh choice" etc. They have a LOT of salad to eat in their lunch buffet which is reasonably priced as well. Indian bhaji joints are good too. Quit patronizing pakistani/mughlai food joints, too fattening. Cut down meals to two per day--cereal breakfast, and a light late lunch. Quit sodas! Yeah, bebzis too. Soda is THE main culprit in extra weight gain. No junk food either, try plain pretzels if you have become a habitual muncher. Workouts might not be too appealing for some, join a sports club like tennis, badminton, soccer, etc. Best is to be moderate in consumption as muslims are supposed to be. Two meals a day are more than enough especially for our life styles. And be steadfast.

Octaganol Bro, that first post could have been me writing it! I used to walk to work, walk to the town centre and carry home several bags of shopping, walk to the gym, walk to the mosque, walk everywhere, even walk in my sleep! I also used to be very active training several times a week in sports such as boxing, taekwando and grappling. Than i passed my driving test and drove everywhere. I quickly gained weight, as i drove to work and just got lazy and stopped training, training maybe once in every two weeks.

Gaining weight didnt really bother me as i felt rather chilled out and happy just sitting around chatting with freinds and eating. i was like this for about a year until i was introduced to a sister to discuss marriage. Now i'm gona be getting married, and that has proved a huge reason to get me of my backside and into the gym! All of a sudden i have found new inspiration to train, and train hard, to get rid of all that excess weight and than to keep it off for many years to come.

I also now really enjoy training and dont see it as a hard slog, and so this makes it easier to keep training and not getting sick of it. The key though is not to always push yourself to your limits as this causes you to dred the next workout, and you'll eventually stop training.

This is how i basically got back into training.

My car was a problem, and by a miracle of Allah, i got a parking fine, having to pay £45! £45!! Imagine how much i could do with that money! anyway this inspired me to just forget the car and leave it at home. So i started walking wherever it was possible.

For a couple of weeks i started cycling in the evenings on a bike, just around local streets for 30 minutes, just gentle cycling.

Than i got a gym pass for a week, and having paid, i thought i may as well make the most of it and went everyday, just hitting the punchbags and using the tredmills, and other wierd fitness machines.

by this time i started feeling fit enough to go to my main bkxing gym again, so i started boxing properly, but only 2 light workouts a week.

after several weeks, i started picking up the intensity and going all out. i've been doing that now for several months. Now i train 4 or 5 times a week, down different boxing gyms, run twice a week, walk whenever i can, use fancy fitness machines whenever i get the chance, and i feel fitter than ever, i'm in the best shape of my life, and really enjoy this trianing.

The key is having a reason to trian, to be your motivation (wife, upcoming marriage, maybe contests etc) and to also enjoy training, as if you dont enjoy it, you'll eventually give up again.

Bro if you want specifics of the type or workouts let me know, also let me know what part of the country your in as i'm also a boxing trainer and could maybe do 1 on 1 training with you to get to started.

Hey I'd like to hear from you, maybe we could set up some grappling lessons.
One of the main problems i had with grappling was the loose shorts that the men wear. I'm ok with the Judo suits but anything else...is like aww awful.

Speak to you soon.

Salaams,

Hanif
