House of Sand and Fog -- movie

as salaamu alaykum,

okay, I heard this movie was about Iranian immigrants, so I thought it would be interesting to rent it .. it was so disturbing :o  I couldn't sleep last night after watching it.

basically it is the story of an Iranian family who moves into a new home on the coast, and the entire film is centered around the father struggling with the previous owner for the house.  It has a lot of symbolism and interesting imagery (and one scene to fast forward through), but the last scenes in the movie are just insane.

I'm going to mention the ending here, so don't read this unless you want to know -- the son of the Iranian family is shot in the chest by the police, and there is this scene where the father is running through the hospital, his son's blood on his hands, completely hysterical in despair, and he starts to pray, in sajdah, begging God for his son's life, making all these oaths.  His son dies.  He goes home, feeds his wife medication to kill her, knowing she would go crazy if she heard the news, and then kills himself.  I don't know which scene is more disturbing, the hospital one or the suicide one, but in conclusion:

do not see this film unless you want psychological problems.

I read this book a few years ago, but i've never had the stomach to sit throught the movie.  It is one of those odd paradoxes, it did seem a good book with some good points but the ending was deeply disturbing, even telling people about is was too much for them to listen to.  it is certainly not one of the must reads but I found in intersting how hard the man worked to support his family and how little they seemed to care about all he was going through.
Maybe it is sort of a parable because the iranians move into a house because the ocupant was negligent and then the neglegent ocupant gets the sypathy of a corrupt cop to make life hell for the Iranian family till its too much to live with.
I dont know, books like this should carry warnings but they should still be written because I was able to see the bleakness of someones life (even fictitious) other than my own.
