[slm]...

Then I have these 2 students who are so behind in class that I know they need to be put back 2 grades.  One of them is really quiet and he does not do anything.  He’ll pretend to repeat the lessons as we go through it, only when I turn to look at him.  He does not do his homework nor does he pay attention in class when we are doing a lesson.  When I talked with his parents, they just tell me that he’s slow because he was sick for a long while when he was a baby.  I won’t accept that because he’s not sick anymore and I know he can catch up if he puts his mind to it.

One time when the students had to memorize their short Surah, he was 1 of the 3 that didn’t memorize it so I made them all write the entire Surah.  The other 2 had like 18 Ayats to write and he had 8 very short ones.  When everyone went home, I asked the 3 to stay after to clean the Masjid after they write their Surah.  The other 2 finished in a ½ hour, but he was still trying to write his.  He’ll be flipping pages and just do nothing.  I told him that we won’t leave until he’s done.  He told me he couldn’t write Arabic.  I told him that he could because the Arabic dictations I give out, he doesn’t do well, but he can write Arabic.  So an hour pass by and during that hour he keeps asking me to do it for homework for which I keep rejecting.  But now, I had to go because I really wasn’t going to wait all day.  I told him that he could do it for homework on a few conditions, he must do it, he must show up for class the next day, and he must vacuum the entire upper Masjid.

He agreed.  So I went while he vacuumed.  The next day, he didn’t show up for class so I summoned 2 boys to knock on his door to get him.  He came to class and I asked for the homework.  He looked for it in his binder and says he must’ve left it at home.  So I told him to go get it, he comes back and says that the door is locked even though he thought he left it unlocked.  So I told him to sit at a corner and no one to bother him.  He was going to give that writing to me by the end of the class, period.

10 minutes before the class was over, he hands me it to me and it was great work.  I knew he could do it.  I knew he just needs motivation, but I don’t know how to give it to him other than like the rest of the class.  I know he’s not disabled.  He does not come prepared to class either.  His mother tells me to hit him, but he doesn’t need a motivational rod, he just needs some uplifting pushes.

Question here is, how can I convince the parents to give him that push without telling him that I know you’ve given up on him.  And how do I convince him to keep working without singling him out in front of the class like I did that one time?

Advice?  Jazakh....

Ma-assalamah....
