| Divorce takes the spotlight at Sharjah forum (By a staff reporter) gulfnews.com SHARJAH - About 52 lectures on the issue of divorce were held on Wednesday at a two-day conference that was opened at the University of Sharjah. The conference is debating various issues pertaining to divorce. The conference titled Divorce, its reasons, impact, and possible remedies is debating various issues pertaining to divorce and the social impact of this phenomenon that has become widespread in the Arab World. The opening ceremony was attended by Shaikh Abdullah bin Salim Al Qasimi, Director of Amiri Court in Sharjah, and several dignitaries. In his inaugural speech, Dr. Ismael Al Bishri, Chancellor of the University of Sharjah, said the university contributes through such conferences to studying the social problems involving families and children. "The conference gathers sociologists, academics, and experts who are debating the dangerous impacts of divorce. They have a big responsibility to help the society which is currently facing serious challenges including divorce," he explained, observing that Muslims should follow the Islamic guidelines on marriage and divorce issues. Dr Al Bishri added that the university is committed to organise international conferences that attract prominent intellectuals and academics, besides its role in conducting researches aimed at serving the society and the country. On behalf of the participants, Dr Salih bin Ghanim Al Sayedlan, explained that Muslims are greatly suffering from the widespread problem of divorce. He stressed on the need to follow the Islamic teachings and to work seriously to reduce the divorce rate in the Arab World. Dr Mohammed Al Zohaili delivered a speech on behalf of the organising committee. in which he said that the lack of religious education is among the major reasons of divorce, adding that the percentage of divorce has increased by 40 per cent in many Arab countries. He praised the university's contribution to analysing the reasons and social impacts of this practice. Talking about the challenges facing the Arab World, he said: "Although the conference is dedicated to the issue of divorce, we should also remember the dangerous practices of foreign occupation against our nations in the Arab World." Hanadi Rashid Al Mulaa from the Sharjah Family Supreme Council said that Islamic scholars, sociologists, and intellectuals have intensively studied the causes divorce, but the phenomena is still threatening many Arab families and affecting the social stability. The weak personality of the husband or wife is considered one of the main causes of divorce besides the lack of religious education, marriage infidelity and jealousy, among others. "Divorce is a big responsibility especially that if it involves the future and well-being of the children whose rights as well as those of the couple should be observed in accordance with the Islamic Sharia," she pointed out. |
