Trying to Teach Myself Arabic...Any Suggestions?

I've been trying to teach myself Arabic, but, to no avail. I can't find any place where I live that has courses. To reach the closest center I would have to go over the bridge (to Canada). I ordered "ARABIC COURSE: For English-Speaking Students" by the Madinah Islamic University, but had to send them back; they were too advanced. I'm usually pretty good at self teaching and picking up new languages, but this is driving me insane!!! >:(!!!

Can anyone recommend a good text or guide?

Shukran,

there is a company called audio forum that sells old forign service instatute (fsi) class materials.  If you dont mind learing a dialect the Urban Hijazi cource is very easy and a good beginning.  I took college cources in arabic but they were so bad I needed suplemental material to get by, and I found these tapes indespensable.
However they are very expensive I think I payed $180 for them, but you get tapes for all the lessons and a text which has sligtly illegible arabic script, transliterations, and traslations.  You might find them cheaper on ebay.
They also have an Egyptian Arabic cource that is more expensive and focuses on media Arabic, its good too but it was written back when syria and egypt were collectively called the united arab republic, but  the language hasnt changed that much in over thirty years.
hope that helps

Thank you both for your replys; they were helpful. The link to the 2 month course looked really interesting - I wish that I could actually attend, but subhanallah, I look into the online courses for now.

[slm] Rabia,

Insha'Allah I might have something for you that is affordable!  I bought a Mu'Allim Arabic Cd for the computer for less than $30 from www.islamicbookstore.com.  Okay, so I have only gotten through the first lesson, but I really like the CD and would recommend it.  Insha'Allah this summer I'll be more productive.  My husband, who is a native speaker, likes the CD.   :-*

Try "Elementary Modern Standard Arabic", there are two books, parts 1 and 2, containing a total of 45 lessons, edited by Peter F. Abboud and Ernest N. McCarus.  There are also tape sets of the drills and exercises for pronounciation help.  Both books and tapes are available at the Islamicbookstore.com.  My husband and I have had a lot of success with these books for self-study at home without a teacher, as they come with clear and concise English commentary and explanations that are easy to understand.

Another set of books I would recommend is "A new Arabic grammar of the written language" by JA Haywood and HM Nahmad.  There is also a "Key to a new arabic grammar of the written language" by the same authors, with answers to the exercises in the text.  I believe both of these texts are also available from the website above.

wasalaam,

hope

Sh. Husain Abdul Sattar has a good book on conjugating verbs, ma sha Allah. It's very useful for understanding the structure of verbs and for memorizing their conjugations. It is clearly written and divided into brief chapters that follow a traditional curriculum. It comes with a cd.

...interesting! Again, I thank you all. I was afraid that I wouldn't get many responses, but insha`allah, I will look into as many as I can if not all of them :-* :-* :-*

Assalamu  Alaikum

Here are some links for the Qur’anic Arabic. Some you have to pay, some you don’t. Also, some teach you basic Alphabet, so that you can later on move to more advanced Qur’anic Arabic Inshallah.

This website has plenty of products (some only in Arabic, others in English and Arabic)

This is distance education for Islamic studies. They assume you know a little bit of Arabic, but they offer Qur’anic Arabic, once you know the basics. So it is good for later on. You can take classes individually, no need to study for a whole degree if you don’t want to.
