| Insha'allah I will purchase this book. I have a childhood friend who used to live close to the Zaytuna Inst., he spoke very highly Sh. Hamza Yusuf, as both a person and an Imam. Why I've never purchased any of his books or lectures before I don't know. But I agree, we do need more English speaking scholars and should support them when we are able to |

| [slm] Sister you might want to purchase this book that is available right now: Purification of the Soul by Jamal Zarabozo: http://onlineislamicstore.com/b7250.html Its an excellent book, and has authentic scholarly information, complete with references. I was very pleased that Jamal Zarabozo produced such a book, and I bought it knowing that it would have authentic information, alhumdullilah. |

| as salaamu alaykum, whoa, masha'Allah that is a very good price.. I just pre-ordered :) I like the Seasons journal -- they always have awesome articles and poetry.. but they're so expensive! it's like $15-20 for each journal, which is reasonable for a book, but for a journal of articles? I know Alhambra and Zaytuna take their production quality to the next level, and their stuff is *always* beautifully put together.. but sometimes I wish they had the nice version, and also had a ghetto/student/cheaper version for the rest of us :P but alhamdulillah the book looks awesome.. looking forward to reading it :) for those of you who read zarabozo's book -- how is it? I've read some of his books before, and he's kind of scientific in a way? very structured, straight-forward. so it would be interesting to read his work/approach on tassawuf and tazkiya. |

| hmm, this is a bit off-topic, but thought i'd ask anyways, in case anyone knows... shaykh hamza yusuf has also recently(?) published an audio cassette series on marriage. ive heard his series on the life of the prophet [saw], which was excellent + extremely useful on those long commutes to work!, but no word on the marriage series. anyone know what im talking about? |

| [slm] I think you may be mean this: The Rights and Responsibilities of Marriage Hamza Yusuf In this CD set, Hamza Yusuf discusses the critical elements of a successful marriage based on the Prophetic teaching. He begins each session with an examination of a passage from the Qur'an, followed by the session's main topic. The various topics he covers include choosing a spouse, the legal rulings of the marital contract, life inside the home, childrearing, and the legal rulings of divorce. People who attended the course said that it gave them a greater appreciation of their spouse, improved the quality of their marriage, and many remarked that it was a life transforming experience. | [slm] Mashallah this book is definitely one that is needed in this day and age. There really is a dearth of books on tazkiya available in English. It is interesting to note how in our minority Muslim communities in the West, because of the fiqh-related exigencies and challenges presented to us on a daily basis, most of the Islamic books and works made available in English have dealt with these issues, out of sheer necessity. Yet very little attention has been given to the internal spiritual challenges we face. Alhamdulillah this is changing, with more and more books related to tazkiya becoming available. I wonder how this new book by HY will compare with the previous commentary he gave on the very same work in the "Purification of the Heart" audio series five years ago. I presume the book will be more detailed. I look forward to the comparison inshallah :). [/quote] I agree with Arshad, I enjoyed Sh. Zarabozo's book. It is very much according to his style, and it is structured, which is one of its strengths. As usual he is meticulous in his references and does not draw material from questionable sources. He breaks down the pillars of imaan and Islam and goes one by one, discussing how each one has an effect on purification of the soul and then he goes through basic methodology. The book is more of a holistic approach in that it does not discuss specific spiritual diseases like greed or miserliness ala HY's Purification of the Heart, nor does it go into stages of the heart and all that. It simply presents the message of Islam and its basics, and discusses the benefits of each of those basics on purification of the soul. May Allah reward him. [slm] |

as salaamu alaykum, jazak Allahu khayran for the info.. :) about the marriage CDs.. I don't remember if I read this on the board or if someone told me.. but I heard that they are very good.. the only thing is that shaykh hamza begins each class with an explanation of an ayah from the Qur'an, which takes some time, and sometimes doesn't give him enough time to discuss the topic at hand completely and fully. wasalaamu alaykum :) |
