Do you clap when at lectures or assemblies?

I was at a MSA dinner and after a speaker was done almost everyone clapped.

A brother brought it to his/our attention that we should not clap and it is intensely disliked.

I had read this before..somewhere and was wondering if anyone has heard this?

I think theres a hadith which says clapping is for women and men should say subhanallah, but I think this relates to if the imam makes a mistake in the prayer.  I'm not sure but at my MSA, people clap and bang desks like crazy.  It's kind of embarassing actually.

Q: I would be grateful if you could tell me the position of the Hanafi Ulema on clapping apart from in Salah e.g. after a speech, [-------], etc.

Assalamu alaikum,

There is difference of opinion, about the ruling of clapping.

In general, it is permitted and not disliked if for a reason, such as catching someone’s attention or seeking permission to enter someone house, or to accompany singing, or when playing around with children.

Without due reason, some scholars held it disliked, arguing that it is a blameworthy activity (lahw), and resembles the heedless ways of the Days of Ignorance, of which Allah Most High said, “And their worship at the (holy) House is naught but whistling and handclapping.” (Qur’an, 8.35)

Some others held it to be disliked, though others conditioned its being disliked if done in the way the heedless or disbelievers characteristically do it.

As such, it would be best to avoid it. But given that most scholars have not considered it impermissible, it is not something one should normally correct others about, except through good, sincere advice.

And Allah knows best.

as salaamu alaykum,

off tangent, but have you ever been to an event that has both Muslims and non-Muslims in the audience, and the Muslims shout out 'takbeer'?  It seems like it confuses/freaks out the non-Muslims, no?  Or do I just have a complex about this?

Oh Yeah... freaked me out the first time I heard it!

And about the clapping.. a couple years we read about not clapping. Soon after a bunch of us went to an Interfaith gathering and at the end of the keynote address, everyone clapped except our gang.

I am sure we looked rude and the look of perplex was evident on their faces. Did they think we did not like the address? Did they think we were rude? I can't imagine what the speaker thought....
