Indiana University offers majors in all three fields however you sould read my posts carefully if you should consider persuing an education here. There are some serious law and order issues that prevent me form feeling that it would be likey that as a muslima you could recieve a fair opporunity to achieve you educational goals here.
But the programs look good on paper.

Public Health and Nutrition sounds interesting...I was just reading up on that stuff today...could be a pretty good career for Muslims in regards to advising everyone on the halaal and haraam, living a healthy, halaal lifestyle etc.

I can't really help, unfortunately, since I'm sorta lost myself..though I think I've got a few more months to think about it seriously.

Anyways, you mentioned you go to Rutgers, is that the same uni thats linked to the site: http://www.hidayaonline.com ? I think the Islamic Society's site is: http://muslims.rutgers.edu/ .

Anyways...hope you soon make a decision...that benefits the Ummah inshaaAllaah :)

Was-salaamu 'alaykum.

as salaamu alaykum wa rahmatullah,

aww.. I remember when I was trying to figure out my major :)  don't worry, most students don't figure out their major until after 2-3 years.. and for some it takes even longer  :P

If you are going to be a double major, I suggest *not* declaring a minor.  From my own experience, I think it is just very difficult to fulfill all the requirements.  (I'm a double major in psych and history -- alhamdulillah, my school doesn't require that you declare a minor if you double major).

You mentioned Middle Eastern studies.. have you taken classes in it?  How have you found them?  I think it's a major that interests a lot of Muslims.. it's like studying Islam and getting college credit for it :)  but I think that it's also really challenging, especially when you get to the higher level history courses that are required.  Often times you have to write papers on the most obscure topics that you have absolutely no interest in.. and you often have professors that are pushing a certain agenda, whether its Zionism, secular Islam, or whatever else.. so you have to be on top of your game and know your stuff so that you can defend Islam from a lot of the inaccuracies people try to push as history.

Sorry, I'm not trying to discourage you :)  I'm finishing up my degree this semester, insha'Allah.. so I am just reminiscing.. it's definitely been a challenge, but also an awesome learning experience, walhamdulillah :)

My advice would be: don't declare a major until you have to!  I know a lot of students who have declared a major, realized they wanted to do something else, and wound up having to stay an extra semester or two to make up for it.  So, I think its better to explore your options.. until you are really sure you know what you want to do, and then declare your major/s.

I don't think there are a lot of things you can do with a MidEast studies degree alone, but you can go on to do your Masters or you PhD and become a professor, which is very cool  8) or you can go on to study Islam more intensely by studying overseas or at a US Islamic institution like AOU or SISS.  Hmm.. also every person I know who majored in political science went on to law school.. which is another field we definitely need more Muslims in :)

May Allah put baraka in your efforts and your studying :)

Take care,

wasalaamu alaykum,

thanks a lot sis 7... :)

i took one middle eastern requirement course.... and i loved it! it was islamic scripture... my professor James Pavlin is just wonderful... i think he reverted to islam and mashaallah he taught us well, about islam... i think his class encouraged me to further pursue this major... anyways, i alz wanted to do this... so inshaallah my mind is firm about this...

political science?  i think about that a lot too... hmm... i am in Women Political Cacus NJ of our uni... and i can tolerate politic/ political issues...  i should take the poli sci class and see how i like it... inshaallah i will...

and yeah... i won't declare my mojors... not untill i really have to :)

jazakallah kheir sis..

It took me awhile to decide what I wanted to major in. Well, actually, I always knew that I wanted a degree in History, but for years people discouraged me. Finally, after years of contemplation, even giving in and deciding to go into the Nurse's program at UB, I changed my mind. One of the colleges that I was considering had a joint degree program, History/Government Relations. At first I thought, yuck, Gov't. Relations, no thank you. But then I realized that most of the books that I had recently read, purchased, or checked out the library were Political. So, to be safe, I chose to pursue a degree in Social Science and took a couple of Political Science courses. For my Bachelor degree, I have chosen Political Science - International Concentration (major) / Latino Studies (minor). The latter is something that I've always been interested in, and I read that it will also look good on my resume (diversity). I'm still interested in History and will do something with that when I go on (insha`allah) to graduate school.

Se7en was right, many people do go into law after getting into Political Science, I don't think that I will however. But, you never know. College opens you to so many things. I'll probably just move back to DC and work there with it; but my dream is to work for the UN or on an Ambassadors executive staff in live outside of the states :-* :-* :-*

Whatever you choose as your major, make sure that it's what you want.
