Wearing hijab when reciting the Quran

I have a little problem or better still I need some help finding information.  I work as a first grade teacher in an Islamic school.  Every morning the children have assembly.  During this assembly they say the morning Dua and recite the Quran.  They are required to wear the hijab. I don't feel comfortable forcing my girls to wear the hijab.  If they choose to wear it, then I fully support them, but I want the decision to be their own.

As far as I understand it the hijab does not become fard until puberty.  I also would like to know, if we are required to wear the hijab when we are reciting the Quran?  By this I don't mean reading it, but reciting from memory.  Does anyone know of any hadith or articles that will help me with this issue, even if they prove that I am wrong?  Jazakum Allah Khair.

There are some scholars that say it is necessary, while others say there is no daleel and therefore not obligatory to cover the hair when reading the Qur'an (even when reading from the Qur'an itself).
I wanted to post a link to a fatwa, but cannot get to the site, so will post it:

Question:

What are the rituals before reading the Qur'aan? And, does a sister have to be covered (full hijab) when reading it?

Answer:

Praise be to Allaah.

It is not obligatory for a woman to put on hijaab in order to read Qur’aan, because there is no evidence to indicate that this is obligatory.

Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen said that reciting Qur’aan does not require covering the head.

Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen said in his comments on sujood al-tilaawah (prostration required when reading certain verses of the Qur’aan): “Sujood al-tilaawah is to be done when reading Qur’aan. It may be done in any state, even with the head uncovered, etc., because this prostration is not subject to the rulings on prayer.”

(Fataawa al-Jaami’ah li’l-mar’ah al-Muslimah, 1/249. See also Question no. 4908)

“With regard to reading Qur’aan, it is not permissible for one who is in a state of janaabah (impurity following sexual activity) to read Qur’aan either from the Mus-haf or otherwise until he has done ghusl, because it was narrated that nothing prevented the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) from reading Qur’aan except janaabah. But if a person has broken his wudoo’ (minor impurity), then it is permissible for him to recite Qur’aan from memory because of the general meaning of the evidence.”

(Majmoo’ Fataawa al-Shaykh Ibn Baaz, 10/150)

It is better, and is mustahabb, to do wudoo’ before reciting, because this Qur’aan is the Word of Allaah. So it is better to do wudoo’ before reading it as a sign of respect. But touching the Mus-haf is not permissible unless one has done wudoo’, because Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“Which (that Book with Allaah) none can touch but the purified”

[al-Waaqi’ah 56:79]

(Majmoo’ Fataawa al-Shaykh Ibn Baaz, 10/150)

And Allaah knows best.

With regard to women who are menstruating or bleeding following childbirth, see Question no. 2564.

Jazakum Allah Khair for your replies.  My question really pertains to children, who have not reached the age of puberty.  I am afraid that forcing them to wear the hijab will affect them negatively later on.

asalam alakum sister,
i used to work in an Islamic school and all the girls wore hijab even the kg-girls... it was encouraged for the younger ones, but since i worked with the older ones, i don't know how their teachers did it, but the girls actually wanted to wear it! I remember one day we were in assembley and i was waiting outside, the door when this little kg (or first grader, can't remember) was crying and screaming and refusing to come in. when asked why, the mom explained that the girl's hijab had juice spilled on it and therefore she was unable to wear it, and she was upset because she didnt want to go into assembly without her hijab...how cute is that *smile*....

I work in an Islamic school now, and I work with first graders (earlier in the year I was with kg).  The girls in our school all wear hijab as part of their uniform.  For the younger girls, we allow them to take it off for recess and a while after when the weather is 90 degrees and up, because our school has no air conditioning right now.  They do have to wear it the rest of the time.  Our rational for this is that it gets them in the habit of wearing hijab so that when they reach the age of puberty, they will want to wear it.  Another reason is this: at the age of puberty, it is fard to wear hijab, and as we have both boys and girls at our school, the girls at that age must wear it.  Since they reach puberty at different ages, we just make it easy by starting them off from Kg.

So they are not obliged to wear hijab in  that age .leave them as  they are
I am afraid that forcing them to wear the hijab will affect them negatively later on
Yes  Nothing can  lead to sucees  by force  but i am sure if the child  is  raised  islamically she will automatically do it  when the  time  for  that is due. So dont worry they will all wear INSHALLAH

I don't know...I suppose it has to do with where your children are raised and what type of outside fluences might affect them. I've come to know too many parents who allowed their girls to not wear hijab until puberty. It can sometimes be too late by then. I young girl...12 or 13 who is beginning to develop into a young woman and who may even begin to be attracted to young men may not want to all of a sudden wear hijab. Believe me, I know, I've been there [].

Although I am still childless (ma'saha`allah), I have a 4 year old neice and my closest cousins all have a bunch of daughters; to be on the safe side they are encouraged to wear hijab often and almost all of the time when they get around 7 or 8. I recall a khutbah that I heard by Imam Siraj Wahhaj; he spoke of the importance of having them start at an early age as well. Tell them how nice they look wearing it  :-) and how it pleases Allah (SWTA).

I just think that it's a good idea for them to wear it around the same time they begin to learn to make salah and recite Al-Quran. But that's just my opinion. Ultimately it's pretty much up to the parents I guess.

Oh! :-* :-* :-* there is a Muslimah in my juma`ah who has 2 daughters; I've known them since they were babies. There wore hijab while they were just learning to walk. They are so CUTE! Alhamdulillah!
