| salaam Got asked that question. Here is my reply. Thoughts? "The question ‘why, if Islam is so great, are all Muslim-ruled nations disaster areas’ has a simple explanation. The explanation, however, is one that is unpatable to the vast majority of Muslims. It is on a par with French reactions to the suggestion that Napoleon was a villain, or American reactions to the suggestion that their good intentions sometimes aren’t good enough. The explanation is quite simple: Islam is exactly what it says it is, and fails only in so far as people do not live up to its message. In Saudi Arabia, Iran, the Taliban, we witness the complete victory of a message that has never been what it says that it is, and becomes even more of a lie when people do live up to its potential for evil. The perversion of Islam practised by the rulers of those nations is not designed to help us remember Allah, but to trick us into forgetting Him, not to invite new people to the brotherhood of Islam, but to create powerful enemies determined to destroy Islam. The attributes of the perverted Islam are many, but the forgetting of Allah is the most dangerous. Where they rule, it becomes easy to forget that Allah is the giver of infinitive justice and that all Muslims are held to account for their actions. To become complacent, to assume that evil acts are somehow forgivable because they are committed in ‘Muslim’ lands, there the Devils lay their traps. The addition of an ‘Islamic’ in front of anything does not and must not be taken as cojferring morality and rightfulness upon the nation and its rulers. There are plenty of examples of well-meaning people believing that a ‘communist’ nation was a workers paradise (Stalin’s term for those people was ‘useful idiots, which gives you some idea how the objects of their admiration felt about them), and, alas, there are plenty of people who believe that an ‘Islamic’ nation is somehow great. The dangers of permitting this to go on are obvious. The followers of the perverted Islam do not seek truth, justice and the peaceful spreading of Islam. Their desire, which is never expressed, is a nihilistic desire to break the Deen of their subjects and to destroy Islam. It is them who are Islam’s worst enemies. As long as Islam holds such foes to our collective bosom, we will suffer and face extinction. " |

| [slm] yes Chris, you are right and I will add a little here. It is not only the fault of the rulers but also that of our intelligentsia and the masses, for a people get rulers that they deserve. This is the gist of a Hadith I recall dimly, but I am not sure of the authenticity of that Hadith. History tells us that Muslims suffered in the past and fell into decline, but recovered. Why has Allah (swt) allowed us in traditional Islamic lands to be subjected to occupation and exploitation? because there are to be no more prophets. This Ummah is supposed to carry out the task of prophets, and it has abandoned that task. What was their task? to call others to Islam; to live a life which is a model of Islam. It was not to fall victim to the temptations of this world. We collectively, not just the rulers, have fallen for these temptations. and we commit a shirk. We regard our temporal rulers as our Raziq. We may not say so in so many words, but our actions speak that. In order to bring the Ummah back to the right path, many reformers have arisen but their influence, although promising at first, has fallen short of success. Why? for the reason you mentioned. They, or their followers, have failed to take into account the full message of Islam. This is to be expected. We are not masoom (innocent). The prophet [saw] told us of this happening, and told us the remedy. dhikr! remembrance of Allah. not just by the tongue, but witnessing through our deeds. In fact I am quite sanguine now. Islam has reached the four corners of the world, as the prophet [saw] told us, and the next generation is more aware of its responsibilies than ours was. |

| The bigger the test, the greater the reward ;) Indonesia has the largest muslim population of any state anyway.. |
