What do you think?

Do any of you ever think (when calamities befall upon your family) that things probably happened because of some sin you may have done?   … Or maybe some sin your other family members have done?...especially when your tribe [whole khandaan (?) <-----Urdu word] were Imam, Islamic scholar, and durvesh... nowadays, the current generations are not religious anymore... therefore, maybe Allah [swt] is punishing the current generations?   ...

khandaan = خاندان   = family (usually extended family), not tribe
tribe =   قبيله   = Qabeela

now to your question.

There is a verse in the Quran which says that the calamities you face in this world are due to your own sins. I have certainly found this to be true. There is a Hadith that if somone makes istaghfaar his/her wadifa وظيفه  , Allah (swt) will solve his problems from a direction /opening he never knew existed. I have experienced this myself, but this is on a personal scale. For a group, or for the Ummah, we can note the tauba (repentence) of the people of Yunus (as), who were granted reprieve even though they had seen the punishment coming before they made the tauba. There is another Hadith when the Muslims are asked to remember Allah (dhikr-Allah) which will result in their misery being averted. I have only quoted the sense of what I got from these verses and Hadith, and if nayone can post the actual words, I will be grateful. and if I am wrong, please correct me. MAy Allah (swt) forgive me for quoting anything wrong.

salam,

the way you can tell if something is a punishment or not is your reaction... If you complain and are disturbed and upset and stop doing the things you should, it is punishment. If you respond with sabr (patience) it can become a kaffarah, atonement of our sins. if you respond with ridaa (pleasure in whatever Allah gives you) this is the highest level and is a sign of mahabba of Allah and raising in levels. But of course, this is the level of anbiyaa and awliyaa, but we can always strive right ;)

Rabia al Adawiya has a great quote in the MadinaNews on this:

Jaffer asked Rabia when a devotee might become content with God. She replied, "When his joy in affliciton equals his joy in blessing." - Abu Makki

Bring to rememberance the very hard trials the prophet Job bore witness to. He was an upright man, and committed no sin, but it was necessary for God to permit his trail in his faith.

For all other things, two things come to mind.

1) No person can bear the sins of another. Each must bear only what they have done.

2) God's will is not ever made fully known to us, and can never be understood. So it is still best to keep one's HEART trusting in God and tightly control any suspicions and doubts that come to mind, because they can be very destructive.

Assalamua'alaikum,

I need to agree with sr. Jannah per how one reacts to misfortunes is the  most important element, everone is tested(no ones is exempt from misery) in various ways high and low from Bush to Saddam to Bin Ladan to Mussaraf  ....keep ones faith alive and remain true to ones nobler self--as this life is but a test.
To not let lives inevitable calamities change one into a negative, ungrateful to Allah(s.w.a) , wishing ill to others persons, or accept or develop attributes one finds less than wholesome in others.  :-X

I wish I could recall reference but am sure that either a Sahih Hadith or Qu'ran tells us that our good Deeds will be rewarded in both this life and the next, just as our bad punished in this life and the next.  :-*

I would suggest when feeling low go to www.harunyahya.com website (or others) where you can download free A/V presentations on 'Answers from the Qu'ran' and many other wonderful topics that will help restore ones faith that Allah(s.w.a) mercy and benevolence is greather than his wrath and punishment. That he loves and cares for us tremendously.

Also, help strenghten ones Deen towards greater patience and perserverance(hallmark trait of the Muslim community) in the trials and tribulations of our lives.

Per my own personality I try to remember the Hadith "Do not let oneself be the oppressor nor the oppressed" and the Ayaht "Allah(s.w.a) will not change the condition of a people till they (first) change what is within themselves"......these help me ponder and reflect[Qu'ran often tell us to ponder and reflect]  how I may be contributing to percieved punishments and  less than ideal situations, thoughts, and feeling I may be a part of.

Hope this helps :)
