Traditional Islam and Salfi Islam

I think this is an important question, and I hope this thread does not get locked.  But plesae STAY CLAM when replying to this thread as it's an emotional topic.

What are the main differences between Salafi Islam, as espoused by scholars such as Sheikh Albani and Shiekh Ibn Uthameen, and Tradtional Islam, as espoused by scholars such as Hamza Yusuf? (Note : I do not mean sufism here).

Are these two orthogonal ways of looking at the deen?  Are they reconcilable, or irreconcilable?

Why does each party give the impression that the other party either does not exist, or is on the wrong paph?  Do the scholars ever get together and put up a united front?

Are there are modern day scholars who are accepted by both camps?

Are there any of you out there who have seriously studied under both camps?

Like, I said, would appreciate calm replies so that this does not get locked.

Jazak Allah

slm,

I just wanted to add something about what has happened in the past for those who think the board is "biased towards one type of islam". When we have allowed these controversial topics to be discussed on an "intellectual calm basis" on the request of someone, as a trial, or just out of not seeing that it was developing into that (mods not realizing until too late); the most vocal members of the board tend to post alot and dominate the discussion (mods or regulars). and they may go one way or another on a topic. and then after realizing the thread is going nowhere or causing animosity, degregading into chaos and insults, we will close the thread.

so then it will appear to people that we allow certain views and topics of a "type of islam" and not others!

so just keep that in mind when we don't allow certain topics.. inshaAllah. sometimes we have to cut off something at the root or dissappoint a few people for the greater good.
