| Assalamua'alaikum Dear Brethren, A Caucasian Sister that is a recent revert to Islam(former Catholic) emailed me this very stereotypically ::) insightful :-/ article per comparison test of American wife vs Brown wife. It is humourous, and funny. :D and oh...please don't take it seriously :o but feel free to use it as a discusison point ;-) American Wife VS. Brown Wife Written by: Hamzah Moin Yes, the ultimate brawl is about to take place. VS. The American Wife The Brown Wife Well no its not really a brawl but easily the world's greatest comparison ever made. Deciding on getting a wifey but don't know which to get? One wife is better than the other...but it all depends on your perspective. Now I'm not talking about the brown wives who act white...I'm talking about the wifies from India/Pakistan/Bangladesh/OtherBrownCountries that you import here. There will be several scenarios given and what each wife would do in the scenario. This is through the eyes of a male but females can still enjoy this enlightening article. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- You arrive at home a little late after an exhausting day at work and your stomach is growling. You want food and you want it now. The American Wife will leave you a note on the fridge saying "dinner is in the sink" and you are forced to unthaw it on your own. The wife is elsewhere in the house watching her American Idol or will not be in the house at all. The Brown Wife will know that you are late because she has been calling your cell non-stop as you were 5 minutes late. You do not need to tell her to make dinner as it is already made and still steaming. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Uh-oh...looks like you made a big mess. The American Wife gives you a flurry of curse words as you try your hardest to clean-up. The Brown Wife: What mess? It's already cleaned up. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- You see that it is a beautiful day and decide to go outside and take a walk with your wife. The American Wife will yell at you shouting that there will be no walks until you take out the garbage. The Brown Wife is unaware of the term "go outside". -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- After shoveling the snow for hours you decide to finally come inside for some comfort as your back is killing you. The American Wife will tell you to go back outside as you missed some spots. She then finds a soft spot in her heart and tells you to give her a massage. The Brown Wife has already made you a cup of hot chocolate and has set the table up for your massage. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Your wife says to you one night that she wants a job The American Wife is just talking in her sleep. She already has a job. The Brown Wife is just talking in her sleep. Why would she want a job when you bring in the dough? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Your kid is feeling sick... The American Wife tells you its your turn to skip work and look after the kid as she skipped work last time. The Brown Wife: No problemo. She stays at home anyway. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- You decide to cook a meal... The American Wife: You are forced to cook at least twice a week anyway to show that you "share" the kitchen. The Brown Wife laughs at your antics and simply takes over and begins to cook the meal herself. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- You decide to watch your favourite sport on TV The American Wife: Fat chance. Your wife tells you to read about the results in tomorrow's paper. She tells you that you can't find the results for Gilmore Girls anywhere The Brown Wife: The TV has your name written on it. The only time your wife watches TV is on Saturday mornings when the Indian program comes on. She goes back to cutting onions. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Your wife comes up to you and says that she wants a divorce The American Wife: You brush it off as after all she says it every morning. The Brown Wife: She is just practising her English. She is learning to structure words and today's lesson are words that begin with D. You tell her its pronounce DIVORCED not DIWORCED. She laughs happily and hugs. |

| wlm, I had this article forwarded to me by, of all people, a few sisters of the community. And for the life of me I just can't understand why it would be funny to anyone? Like who is being made fun of here? the American wife or the Brown wife? Don't y'all think it's just insulting to women in general? Maybe those sisters didn't consider themselves to be of either group so it didn't bother them? Or thought it was funny because it was streotypical? maybe I'm too sensitive on this issue... sigh Allahu alam |

I can well imagine some of the instances and people who are like that ;D I think if you want to critique it, :) then it should be to ask why is it American wife versus brown wife? I mean, just because you're brown doesn't mean you will display attribute such as homeliness, cooking, cleaning, doting on family, etc. And why is it assumed that the American wife is white? Isn't it a bit prejudiced to assume that white women possess attributes like these? I know, I know its a joke, but I'm just saying that IF the joke was deemed as offensive, then it seems to be more racially prejudiced than sexist. That's IF. Personally I don't think its so bad. (Phew! Brother Kashif, I bet you didn't realise your joke would have such a reaction from people! :P ) [wlm] |

And most of them are white, as am I! :) If we can't poke fun at ourselves, our neuroses, our flaws and insecurities, then we'd better go and hide ourselves. :) |

| I agree with Jannah and I found it very insulting and it makes American women/wives look like mean, lazy and rotten wives. The author appearently has not seen a good old American country / farm wife in action. I go to bed sometimes hours after my husband I wake up 9 out of 10 times before him. I cook, clean, do laundry and make a living (running my own businesses). While also tend to animals, volunteering and more. Oh and I even mow the lawn ::) And I know many other American women doing the same. >:( >:( >:( This was not humor, it makes folks who read this and don't know American woman look like bossy, lazy, mean women. I can deal with the mean and bossy :P But I am not a lazy mean and bossy lady ;) |

| [slm] silly people....its funny because it makes fun of the guy. the deshi wife acts as as his domestic slave because the guy can lord over her and dominate her because she's clueless about society and comes from the third world and he plays on her vulnerability. the western wife doesn't have such vulnerabilities and will tell the guy to go flush himself down the toilet if he tries such neandrathal antics with her.... |

| [slm] Personally, I thought it was funny, yet borderline offensive. It's kind of like when I've heard black comedians make fun of white folks. I laugh because its funny and there is some truth in it,albeit stereotypical. Yet, somewhere deep inside I'm on the defesive and a little offended. . . like yeah, but I'm not like that (I'm white). At the time, I thought it was making fun of the American woman more for being so aggressive and disrespectful. I think this is because my husband (Arab) and I have definitely experienced some cultural differences and I've gotten the "American women are crazy" (in jest or not) more than once. ;) Now looking back, I can definitley see the other side. BTW, my husband read this and he laughed, but then at the end he said "that's mean." [wlm] |

| [slm].... I was laughing so hard, my brother looked at me wierd. Then I read all the comments and then...Hyper? That's not funny. That's why these women find this offensive. But other than that....it's hilarious.... :D :-/ :'( :-/ ;D :D *sigh* takes abreather cause sides are hurtin'. It's hilarious cause it's the 21st century and it ain't like that anymore. | Assalamua'alaikum Dear Brothers and Sisters, Yikes.... :'( I now kinda regret posting that article. Intention certainly was not to offend anyone or to create negative views of American women nor of Brown women. As a comparison I realize the article went to dramatic and misleading extremes , that that would be offensive if believed that author actually meant those extremes. :) I also doubt any males consider that a manual on women. Any successful marriage is a relationship of sharing and give and take, and part of beauty would be sharing in cooking, shores, raising children etc.... that would be a more ideal form of marriage for myself and males in general. :-* Thinking deeper I know in traditional south asian culture many of a womens rights are denied and and her value is tied to her abilities as a housewife. Yet, now both in South Asia and abroad women rightly expect more from marriage(and divorcing option more acceptable) from a bad husband. While more husbands also want to provide a more well rounded relationship that their grandparents/parents generations. Once again apologies to Muslimas :-) that the article offended. |

| Just thought id say that im white. But I too find this sterotypicall and a few points made me laugh. My point is that while most western women are like that, not all are, like me I am very interested in islaam and learning more, and one day when I feel is right I will convert :-), but im stil learning. To be honest I wish I was the "brown" wife and one day hope to be. Becasue things you have said that the "white" wife would do I dont consider to be acceptable as a wife. I would be more than willing to do anything for my husband and our kids and stay at home all day to do such things. Id love to cook for him while he was at work so he could come home to food, thats just being a wife. Things you said about the "white" wife is so typical of how the world is going. |
