Rumors have been going around for years that both Pepsi and Coke contain dodgy stuff.  Rumors, not proof.  Easiest thing to do is to visit their web sites, or write to them.  Don't rely on rumors.

And have one on me.

Pepsi Pakistan have dodged the issue, when approached.

ask Pepsi and Coke in the US. They might tell the truth.

From what I know, Pepsin is indeed included in these drinks, and that is also the reason for its digestive qualities. Pepsin is taken from the stomachs of animals, which imclude cows as well. I am not quite sure whether it is extracted in apure form from stomach juices, or whether it is used as is with some treatment. However, since  there is no separation between cow and pig products at this stage, the pepsin used is likely to come from pigs.

In fact, many of the consumer items used now contain pig products.

These include biscuits which are coated with a fine alyer of lard to give them a crispy taste. Beauty products which contain fine fats (pig) because these are supposed to most closely resemble human fats, etc.

Another most serious objection is that both pepsi and Coke are companies that donate heavily to the Zionists, as does Unilever, and many others.

avoid what you can, propagate what you know, ask Allah to save yourself from these, and seek forgiveness of Allah.

Here Pepsi and Coke have registered a decline. Mecca Cola and Amrat Cola have been introduced. We do not know their composition. McDonalds have sold out to Hashwani's, not that the letter are any likely to be any better.

Ah for the good old days, when our foods and other consumer items were halal.

Just doing a quick search I found this on www.eat-halal.com

Q. Is it true that 'Pepsin' is one of the ingredients used in Pepsi? i.e. the pepsin that originates in pig/ox stomach??
A. This matter has been investigated in the past, and to the best of our knowledge, no questionable ingredients were found in Pepsi. After investigating it was found that the name "Pepsi"  was being linked to "pepsin" just because the two words sounded alike.

I tend to believe their judgment becuase I wouldn't see the purpose of having a highly acidic digestive enzyme in a soft drink.

The more I learn about halal/haram foods here in the states, the more it makes my head spin.  I just do my best to avoid pork and pork fats(of course), gelatin, and dishes containing a lot of alcohol.

BTW, what article are you referring to?(sir kaleems)

:)
silly point for sure, but I had been wondering why do we need to call this section "Bebzi stand" and have the pepsi emoticon in the forum? - you know like doing free advertising for them?

how about the "water cooler stand" as a name? That sounds pretty cool too.  8)
And have a cup of steaming chai as an icon maybe?  ;D

It's true that PEPSI contains PEPSIN whose origin is from pig's fat.
Yeah faisal, the article which sir kaleem has been travelling since years. as every one knows .

It is that scientifically or medically it is dangerous. not only pepsi but its related products too.

Islam has prohibted one to have any sort of dring which cause unconsciousness or with what a person loses his senses. like wine etc.

But there has been no such proof about PEPSI but its better not to use them. :P

I agree with the post that says we shouldn't rely on rumours.

I'm not sure it's important but. . . pepsin wouldn't be stored in fat, it would be produced as pepsinogen in specialized cells within the lining of the stomach, namely "chief cells" that occur in the gastric glands.  :D

Upon looking at my diet pepsi in the fridge, there's no mention of pepsin.
Also, I did more research online about the subject and couldn't find anything saying Pepsi is haram.

Question 7: We were told that Pepsi-Cola contains pepsin from the pig stomach. Is this true? If it is, then it should be Haram (unlawful) to drink it.

Pepsi-Cola does not contain pepsin from hogs, nor any other animal source. In fact, it does not contain any enzyme at all. The names ("pepsi" and "pepsin") are closely related in writing and could have created such misunderstanding. Pepsi-Cola's function is to help digest food similar to that of pepsin; therefore, there is no correlation, and Pepsi-Cola does not have the enzyme pepsin.

Q.) Are soft drinks such as Pepsi, Coca Cola, 7-up, etc. halal? I've heard that they contain a small percentage of alcohol. Kindly respond as soon as possible. [Afaq Shakoor, Pakistan]

A.) In USA, according to Coca Cola and Pepsi companies, there is no animal derived ingredients and alcohol in their products. 7-Up Co. did not claim that the natural flavors in 7-Up do not have alcohol as a solvent. I do not know about their status in Muslim countries like Pakistan and Saudi Arabia.

This website lists the following beverages as halal:
http://www.angelfire.com/ma4/mcch/docs/halal.html
All Normal & Diet - Seven Up, Coca-Cola, Sprite, Lilt, Fanta, Tango, Pepsi Cola; Schweppes, Five Alive, Fruit Burst, Sunny Delight, Lucozade, Ribena

although it doesn't mention Pepsi, this website has a fairly extensive list of products that are both haram and halal.

Gladly, until I find proof otherwise, I'm going to continue to enjoy my diet pepsi with lime, inshallah.   []
