Why bother?  Just get married to a good desi woman, and leave the rest to her.

Fenugreek is what desis call methi.  It's available in both seed form and leaf form.  You can get it from any desi grocery.

Assalamu Alaikum

you can buy  "Shan spices" brother. They have all kind of spices for many varied kind of food: eggs, meat, rice, fish, etc. They have recipes on the back, so you can use it, they will tell you how

If there is halal store near you, they probably sell them, otherwise you can telll them to order it, or you can buy it online. let me know if this is what you want.

now i know where desi men are coming up with these wack ideas from!!!! dont discourage the few, yet mighty, men out there willing to do battle with a spatula!

ps...shan spices are the bomb.. you can cook anything under the sun with those. also, look for national brand masalas. they got instructions on the back and everything.

[wlm] warahmatullah wabarakaatuh ! :)

Welcome to the Rookie Cooks Club! :)
Here's a website for spices:

http://www-ang.kfunigraz.ac.at/~katzer/engl/generic_frame.html?spice_welcome.html

It contains names of spices in various langauges and a pic too.

Fenugreek is called alba in Malay.. but I guess, Urdu would work well with you too :)

I've been frequenting this website for recipes: www.allrecipes.com

What I like about it is that it is very established and you can choose to cook from tried and tested recipes that comes with helpful reviews from hundreds of those who hv tried them.

Too late. This desi bro got married to a busy, active, smart Malay woman  :D
We gave the honour to our men to be in the kitchen ;)

If you get a good cookbook on any kind of "regional" or "ethnic" cooking, they should have a section on basic ingredients and spices that are common in that cuisine. I like Madhur Jaffrey's books on Indian cooking, and she also has an Eastern Vegetarian cookbook that covers an area from the Middle East to Japan and Korea; Claudia Roden's book is a good intro to Middle Eastern cooking.

You'll probably find good books like these in the local library, no need to spend lots of $$$ on them.

Those Shan spices are also excellent, they give a good flavour when I attempt "desi dishes"!

It's great to hear of a brother learning to cook. Ma sha Allah.

mashaaAllah this site is a gem, its plain brilliant!! thks.

i cooked on the weekend, spent 6 hours, broke my back and im not gonna do it for some time, lol. ill stick to grilled meat for a bit.

perhaps i was too ambitious, cooked too much to send to my aunt, ma and sisters family . . . .

well i did beef ball korma and tandoori prawns and pilau, while it was just alright, i felt it could have been better. me wife did two simple dishes ie aloo gobi and a raita/salad thingey and they turned out better that what i did . . . . so moral of the story is  - leave da cooking to ur wife! cheers, wa assalaamu`alaikum!
