If you're in the US (I imagine this can be done in any country)
Whenever I have been given a medication I am not familar with
(I have done this with even antibiotics, etc)
Go to any pharmacy, they will even talk to you over the phone.
Ask to speak with the pharmacist and they will gladly tell you all about
the med, it's effects, normal doses (so you can see if you have a hih, low or med dose) and it's side effects.
They will look things up in a book called a PDR.
Also go on line and do a web search on it.
I am a big fan of self education before taking anything.
Remember doctors are mere educated men and women (not God)
and not perfect and
not infaluable(sp) They too make mistakes and the one living with the
consequences is the patient.
I have found Pharmacist (Chemist) to be much more knowledgable with meds than the
doctors who prescibe them. Just my opinion.
I was once denied a test I wanted with no explaination.
I did a web search and went back to the doctor and
demanded it for my peace of mind.
Instead of explaining this test was no accurate pre menopausal.
And could give a false high ( during ovulation)
and then allow me to do it during the
proper time. No he was to lazy to explain and trust me not to freak out
at a false high. I had to do my own research.
For the bros and sisters in the medical field here it was a CA-125
which needed to be under 35 which I get every 6 months cause I
have put off a surgery. Well mine are always 9 and under.
Had I not took responsability for my own health and knowledge
I would not have been able to get this test.
I am a big fan of self-education
After all, you are the one left behind to deal with any and all consequences
good or bad.

Sorry to make this so long but another experience.
At 29 a doctor wanted to surgery on my back. (herniated disk) I educated myself and also questioned the doctor (who was a dork anyway)
And I chose to not have the surgery and here I am almost 43, so 15 years later
I am not in pain and can still lift a bale os hay (70 to 120 lbs) as a matter of fact I can unload a truck of it.
If I had the surgery who knows the pain I might of had or if my back would
of been worse. I am not saying defy docs just to educate yourself on what they are going to you or giving you.

sister, I noticed from your profile that you are in Canada... here in the GTA "Shoppers Drug Mart" (I'm not sure if they are Canada-wide) gives a print-out with every prescription they dispense, it gives lots of info. Tells you what the drug is for and what side effects to look out for. They even keep track of other meds that they have dispensed for you, so hopefully they can look out for any conflicts (drugs that will react if taken together). I also found their pharmacists very helpful and willing to advise. So as others have said, look for a helpful pharmacist. And I second Sr Azizah's advice to educate yourself too.

May Allah grant you healing and peace of mind.
