Yeah man...someone once told me it was haraam to shower before the 8th day.  As far as I know, it's extremely unhygienic to not have showered for 8 days in a row.

Oh and the hair thing...I heard that one too...I also heard it's haraam to clip your nails when you have your period.  Is this a fiqh-y issue?

Wasalaam.

I've heard that too. ABout the hair and nails. From what I was told, it is because the woman is in an impure state so cutting of the hair or nails, that would be impureas well, would risk getting them into or onto something. That would cause impurity everywhere. Personally I think it doesn't make no sense at all!

Another thing that comes to my mind which this topic reminded me of was an old wives tale that it's harram to throw a woman's cut hair anywhere like in a waste basket. I heard you had to bury it because for someone to see even just one hair is very haraam. Any truth to that?

I have that hair-nails-shower thingy in my country too, well it just doesnt make any sense and I asked some people and ulemas concerning this, it's all tale and doesnt have anything to do with fiqh. wallahu'alam.

I looked it up for you in Fiqh-usunnah and it says that it is Ja'iz for both the ha'idh and the junub to do cut the nails, shave, etc.

ive heard abt the shower thing too, but not that its haraam. according to hakeems here in indo-pak {hikmat (name for traditional indo-pak medicine)} its unhealthy to take a shower before the 3rd or 4th day bc its supposed to slow down and extend the duration of ur period, which can over the years become harmful, they say this is the reason behind the post-menopausal problem things that women face. their logic is that water is cold and making ur body cold slows down the flow of blood and makes it clot or somthing. not only do they say that taking showers is bad but also drinking cold fluids is bad bc of the same reason. i think there is some truth to this since ive also heard an OBGYN lady (not in pakiland but america) say that for cramps (during or before ur period) u shud drink warm milk or somthing warm since the reason we get cramps is bc of the passing out of blood clots. warm stuff helps in unclotting.

sorry for the gruesome detail.

i personally dont think all of it iis true and i myself take showers during those days and drink cold stuff etc., but i think there is some validity to the point. yes i no, s ome of what they say is completly ridiculous, but modern medicine is fairly new whereas hikmat is based on ppure experience passed on from hakeem to hakeem for centuries,
yall r probably wondering where i got all this from;  being the great granddaoughter of a hakeemi, i have my sources.
jus me 2 cents

masalaam,
:-)

ps  about the showers being haraam ideology, i think how it came about is that first women heard it was bad and as time passed ppl had no idea y it was bad and they assumed that since its bad it must b haram and yea

[wlm]I think such prohibitions have no any base except it is  just an innovation practiced in certain areas as a part of their culture but not a common islamic command

taking shower  and finger nails removing as ameans of cleaness then Islam does not order us to keep dirty things over our bodies for any reason but it excuses us for not washing these if there is no water

to prove this as we know it is allowed for the spouses to have their pleasure except to have sexual intercourse during the wife's mense so if such  pleasure is allowed it is clear this should take place within good physical cleaness
i cant imagine a woman not having shower  for days with scary finger nails in this position
there are evidences for this if it is reqiured but the absence of the prove for its being haram already is sufficient

i know muslim women arent supposed to do their eyebrows, but I'm not sure if the hair inbetween counts or not. actually I'm kinda glad muslim women shouldnt tweeze their eyebrows because I would usually end up making mine look bad anyway, and allah was better at making them match somewhat than I am.
