[asm] where do muslims send their charity? the reason i'm asking is because collections are usually made for palestine, iraq, and other flashpoint areas. i once asked a rep from muslim aid, why more collections aren't made for say africa, and he said that people weren't as eager to donate to such places. he basically boiled it down to some latent racism. |

[wlm] I think most people give their zakat and other charity to their local masjids, who then in turn have diffrent methods of distribution. I think many people are too scared to give their money to muslim relief organizations because the government keeps closing them down or accuses them of "aiding terrorists" even if they are not. |

[slm] perhaps it is racism...maybe there is more sympathy by Muslims for people in 'Muslim' countries..or they believe charity begins at home..there is also the influence of the media or whatever campaigns charities have at certain times. i think there are a number of things involved and not just one thing But i do know that Islamic charities have had and still do have funds for countries such as Africa (there was a big campaign when there was a drought in the Horn of Africa), El Salvador and India (when they had earthquakes), China etc as well as local projects to help local communities. |
