Now that England have dropped Heskey i'll watch them, and i even think they'll get quite far in this tournament. But i really think that France are going ot win the tournament.

What are people's highlights of the tournament so far? Two of mine are:
- Zidane's double against England
- The Italian player scoring in injury time only to realise that it was of no use due to the draw between Sweden & Denmark. haha... that was hilarious!

SOCCER!!!!!

Man I was in Paris for the first French game...it was crrrraaaazy.  Champs Elysees was just on fire!!

As for who I'm supporting...anyone but the french.  No reason other than the fact that I think someone else should win, lol.  I kinda like the dutch orange, but I'm not particularly supporting them.  I like the Czechs too.  ooooh it would be awesome if they won.

I LOVE SOCCER!!!! LEZ GO.

Wasalaam.

Believe it or not, this old lady loves football (soccer to you guys in North America).  My boys and I are football funs and we take sides and enjoying riling each other so much!

My problem with Euro 2004 is that I am too tired when I get home which is late and so the my sons just want to know which team I am supporting before I go to sleep.  And in the morning, I am given the run down of what happened.

I would like France to take the Cup!  England have already been put in their place, thank you Portugal! I learned from my eldest son that Beckham did a Roberto Baggio (USA 1994) with a penalty kick.

what a game it was last night!  []  The penalty shoot-out has to be one of the highlights of this tournament...the portugese keeper was so cheeky!  It doesn't seem like anyone here supports England, do they? (and FYI, it took a massive 1 min 26 secs for a mention of 1966...  ::))

Anyway, who's your (hypothetical) money on now?  Tomorrow's game between the dutch and swedes is going to split me down the middle...but should be a good match.  I'd like one of them to win it...or the czechs....or maybe even the french (though they've not looked so hot)

And JustOne: if you really love the game then you really need to start calling it football...'soccer' just won't do i'm afraid  ;)

So, can Greece do the business tonight??

For my husband it was satisfaction enough that Beckham lost the penalty shot! :D Portugal didn't even have to win after that! But... they did!!!  8)
I don't have anything against England personally, but I do have this thing for portugal cause we spent our honeymoon there  ::)  reason enough to support them :)

England were bound to lose once Phil Neville came on. Did you see his ridiculous attempt at challenging Rui Costa before the latter scored the goal?

After Rooney went off, i just couldn't see where the goal was going to come from for England.

I'm going for the French. Pires, Vieira, Henry, Zidane, Trezeguet. Wa be wah!

Mind you, it would have been nice to see a France v England final.

Did you say it would be nice to see a England vs. France final?  Nooo...man that would be so boring.  I mean the game itself might be okay, but I probably wouldn't sit down and watch it then.  I want some underdog to win. Let's go Czech. hahah.

And people, I can't say football, I'm sorry.  I acknowledge soccer as being football, but I can't say it myself, because I associate football with big helmets and shoulder pads and a mad tackle.  Yeah.  That's right.

And if Greece won, that would be pretty cool, although, I'd rather the french win.  I think.  I don't know.

I can't believe the Italians were scammed though.  I am not happy about that.

ANNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNND does anyone else get the feeling that the Euro Cup is an excuse not to compete with Brazil? heheh.

Wasalaam.

Play on!!

well well well...nothing's predictable this year is it?  who'd've thought France with the brilliant stars they have, would have gone out in such a humiliating way! (hmm, probably those that watched the world cup 2000  ;))

I'm upset that sweden went out...but now i'll have to support holland as they're my (halal) sweepstake team!  though i'd be happy if czech republic won as they look to be the most exciting team to watch.

And i don't support england cos they're arrogant, and i'm not english...and they're the auld enemy  ;)

So here we go - portugal vs greece   and   holland vs the czech republic

Who's your money on now??

PS, a wee quiz...how many muslim footballers can you name (playing in europe...we don't want a list of the saudi national side  :P)

PPS, it feels weird that there's no match on tonight...oh how we've been spoilt!!

What a disaster! France are out to the Euro minnows! It really was a naff performance by the whole team. I wonder if it was due to the fact that most of the French team play in the English premiership and play so many games each season that i finally took its toll on the team resulting in naff and tired performances all round (except Zidane).

Oh well, on to the next team... hmm... i'd like Portugal to win but i think the Czech Republic look - as they say in urdu  zabardast!

Ah, JustOne, football is ours with the legs and the feet.  Yours is RUGBY with helmets and shoulder pads.

Now that the big guns are out of contention, I really don't care who wins except give Portugal the chance for being the hosts and teaching the English a valuable lesson.

With commercialism and big money, most players are tired by the time they get to play for their countries rather than clubs.  And the English need to train their OWN people so that they can have more credible players in future.

Commercialism and big money has taken the beauty out of football!  Gone are the days you enjoyed the art of the game and players.  The beautiful passes, the breathtaking scores (not penalties), the coordination in the team, the respect, a team that knows each other so well.  Now we have people playing in different clubs, brought together to defend the honour of a country while their hearts are not in it.  You can see the difference between when they are playing for a club and when they play for nationhood.  With all those Arsenal players in the French Team coupled with Zidane, you would bet on France.  But alas, they are just strangers brought together for a game.  That they are all French is only in name.

Pele did say that football is no longer what it used to be.  How true!

Who's the bet for tomorrow evening?  I'm impartial, even though I really like oRange.

And sister Halima, don't say that.. :( Soccer -- ugh..okay let me say it -- Football is one of the only sports I pay attention to.  The other one being tennis.  I just think that soccer is such a non-convoluted title for the sport.  Like when I say soccer..everyone knows what I'm talking about.  When you say football, I say which one?  hehe.

Salams y'all :)

Okay I've joined this thread waaaaaay late, the tournaments almost over, but man! there's been a few upsets in it, eh?

JustOne your analysis of the teams based on what COLOUR they wear had me in hysterics!  ;D  :D  :-/  :-/  :-/   :D  ;D
England have already been put in their place, thank you Portugal!

Now that the big guns are out of contention, I really don't care who wins except give Portugal the chance for being the hosts and teaching the English a valuable lesson.
Wow! Sister you sure don't like the English.... with a vengeance.... *gulp* how come?  ???

The England match against Portugal was a real tense affair, I had to do some deep breathing after that game! :P  Despite the valiant effort at defending, it all went pear-shaped after Rooney was injured.  And I think this is the recurring problem with England.  They're a good team, but everyone puts all their hopes in ONE person (this time it was Rooney, last time Beckham, the time before, Owen), and if that one person isnt able to deliver for whatever reason, the English game falls apart at the seams  :(

Still, we had a totally biased ref. Sol Campbell's disallowed goal was daylight robbery!  >:( But at the end of the day, Portugal outplayed us, so we have to take it without getting all baby-like  :'(  :'(  :'( Okay I can't help it!  :D

That was the down point of the tournament for me.  The most satisfying was France being knocked out!  :D  :D By Greece of all teams  :D (sorry, no offence Medo :P )

Anyway here's to the giant-killers Greece.  [] Against all the odds, they beat all the big teams, and got to the final.  Hope they beat the Portugese!  :)

In response to Halima :) Definition of 'Fluke (from dictionary.com):

  1. A stroke of good luck.
  2. A chance occurrence; an accident.
  3. Games. An accidentally good or successful stroke in billiards or pool.

I beg to differ that Greece fluked their way to becoming champions - they showed
consistent and solid performance. It was not a chance occurrence because they drew with Spain and
beat France, the Czech Republic and Portugal - the latter three are world-class teams, by
anyone's account. So how can it be fluke.

Nope, I'll tell you what it is though. It's the triumph of teamwork, discipline and
organization over indivdual flare, flamboyance and ostentation. Each of those Greek players
were technically sound and they came together as a solid functioning whole brilliantly. In
my opinion the Greece of today are a cross between the following two teams:

1. The '70s and early '80s Dutch 'Total Football' inspired by Johan Cruyff and carried
out by himself and other players such as Rude Gullit and Van Basten.

2. The methodical, logical and technically accomplished West Germany sides throught the
'60s, '70s and '80s.

Not many people (apart from the Greeks, for obvious reasons) like to watch the kind of
football that Greece play (me included) - it's not 'showy' football, not very exciting and
lacks sparks of individual footballing genius - but as a means of winning matches - IT
WORKS.

So although we may not like it, credit where credit is due - they are the best side in
Europe. :)

JustOne, i sense a slight dislike of greece...?

and anon, i don't know how you can compare the greek team to the likes of cruyff, van basten and guillit...they had a lot more style and flair and provided us with entertaining matches.  Greece did well to win, but it was hardly exciting stuff to watch!

I recently learned that it starts in 2006.  Brazil all the way!!!!!!!!!

The fact that a team like Greece won the Euro tournament is an indication of the kind of poor skill set of the European teams.    Did Greece even qualify for the last world cup?  The UK didn't, lol.   :D
