[slm] someone i know, has been trying to sabotage my laptop. i was recently told by that person that a logic bomb has been installed on my laptop after sending some junk emails (which i did not open, but recall that i got them). the bomb will erase all contents of the computer and all backups made since then. the person was obviously trying to intimidate me, but did not mention when exactly the bomb will detonate. what can i do to remove it? where do i take it to have it looked at? i imagine that the internet is the only way to gain access to my computer and control that virus from now on. accordingly, i have been avoiding to connect my laptop to the internet. is this a valid way to avoid disaster? help me please - my PhD defense date is approaching. i don't want surprises. take care wassalam Mona |

[wlm] hmm never heard of a "logic bomb", but you could probably take your laptop to any computer professional or friend that knows this stuff and they can clean it out inshaAllah and make sure nothing is on there... also check out software like spybot destroyer and ad-aware |

[slm] I did a quick search and found the following info: Logic Bomb-programming code added to the software of an application or operating system that lies dormant until a predetermined period of time or event occurs, triggering the code into action. Logic bombs typically are malicious in intent, acting in the same ways as a virus or Trojan horse once activated. In fact, viruses that are set to be released at a certain time are considered logic bombs. They can perform such actions as reformatting a hard drive and/or deleting, altering or corrupting data. Prevention Fortunately most logic bombs can be detected and eliminated before they go off if you regularly scan all your computer files using the latest anti-virus software. Do you have up to date anti-virus software? If you don't, you need to get some. It may be as you said, someone is trying to intimidate you and there is nothing wrong with your computer. May Allah protect your work. |

as-salaamu alaikum Make a backup of your work files anyway. And you can do an online virus check from here: http://security.symantec.com/sscv6/home.asp?j=1&langid=ie&venid=sym&close_parent=true&plfid=23&pkj=TBJEWYDMGJCDBXWVPGC |
