Canadian, eh?

Do people guess your accent's origin?

Okay, I do that with people all the time...I hear them speaking, and I try to guess what language they are speaking...most are pretty straight forward, but some of them sound a little sketchy.  Like the East European languages are the hardest to get, because I really can't pinpoint it beyond "East European" ...

Then, if they are speaking in English or French and sometimes Urdu (the only three languages I hold any proficiency with), I try to guess their accents.

It's only until recently, that I realized that people do the same with me.  My brothers both sound completely Canadian, "eh", and my sister sounds totally American, so people normally are able to tell with the three of them.

Most people puzzle over mine though, because I speak more slowly than most people, and I try to enunciate all my words.  And plus, I have a terrible habit of putting on accents.  I can do all sorts, and they don't take an effort, so it depends on my mood, I suppose.

Oh and apparently, I sound like I'm from Marseilles when I speak French.

Where have people placed you, when they judged you by your voice?

Wasalaam.

When someone tries to place my accent, I always ask: "Did you understand what I was saying?"  And the response is: "Yes".  My answer:  "Then that is what is important and I am glad".

But I do enjoy the different accents when English is not a first language!  My, some are beautiful to listen to.

I agree.

Personally, I have been told I have a British accent, American accent and Canadian accent along with a hint of that desi accent by different people at different times. Guess it depends on my mood and whom I'm speaking to. Confusing, eh?

Assalaam Alaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuh..

When I speak English, I speak it completely American. Every once in a while I might throw in a few "eh's" (I live REALLY close to Canada so I hear a lot of "eh's") Sometimes I might get bored with it and kick it up a few notches  ;) and do a little British or mexican or basically anything else. American accents can get pretty boring.

And when I speak Arabic, I sound...Arabic. But different countries have different dialects so I might switch some things around. I like to spice things up a bit.  8)

Wasalaam Alaikum,

Do people guess my accents? They even guess where I am from. No one can tell how I look like. I've been told that I look Spanish? Italian? Russian? - None of those which apply to me. My accent sounds nothing close to American or Canadian. I guess you can say I am from Mars! I can sound like a British Englishmen, and on another day, sound like I'm foreign. However, my accent is Marsian and my skin colour (which is out of topic) would be a camellion like. (I can change colour.)  :-*

Well that's an interesting question. Initially when I started to learn english and tried to communicate in it, people who didn't know english would think I was speaking english and people who knew english would think I was speaking Punjabi (A local language in Pakistan).

But some time back when I appeared in IELTS, I was surprised that I got score 7.0 in speaking module, so I think now my english sounds like english ........

as salaamu alaykum wa rahmatullah,

apparently hijab can give you an accent too :P  when I was registering for the wedding, I talked to one of the bridal consultants at a department store.. she was like, "Your English is excellent!  You only have a little bit of an accent.."   ???

and the other day at a shop here in h-town the woman behind the counter asked me, "where are you from?"   seeing as that is a complicated question these days (I'm never sure whether I should say India, or NY, or just talk about being Muslim) I hesitated and then said, "India."  she said, "Ahh I knew it! I could tell by your accent."

hehehe, it's just a little bit hard to believe, since I was born and raised in the US  :P

and some of the local sisters here say I have a new york accent, when I say like "area", "talk", etc.. I didn't even know I had an accent, I felt very cool and east coast when they said that  8)

btw californians do talk strange :P

wasalaamu alaykum :)
