Determing time for sunrise

I've noticed recently that the time for sunrise given on printed timetables seems to be much later than actual sunrise (for example it's currently listed as 4:50am - but it looks as though the sun has risen by 4:15ish).

How do you know when sunrise has begun and hence the time for Fajr salah is over? Does anyone check for themselves rather relying on the timetables?

Determining the exact time of sunrise in a city is difficult due to the light pollution. Perhaps if you went out on a trek to a place where there were no street lights, you could work it out then. Fajr starts when the light from the sun starts to spread horizontally across.... the horizon.

Here's some information on this topic,as you live in the UK (a country situated way up north), there are some special considerations:

It depends what you mean by sunrise.  Does it refer to the time when the top part of the sun's disk becomes visible from the horizon?  Or does it refer to the time when the entire disk of the sun has risen above the horizon?

I think that's the reason why we often see two different times for sunrise in the tables.

A 35 minute difference sounds too big though.  Odd.

Wassalamu alaikum.
