As-salam-alaikum, I have a question regarding the slaves during the Islamic period/time of the Prophet(saw). I know that slaves were bought and freed. Did the slaves have any rights? Especially female slaves.I read that the masters of the slaves could sleep and do whatever they wished with the girl slaves? Is this true? It is really disturbing and It would really really be helpful if someone answered this. jazakallah khair |

wlm, This topic has come up a number of times before and has been answered quite thoroughly. Please check out the archives inshaAllah. BTW every relationship in Islam is carefully regulated with each person having their rights and responsibilities.. even down to the neighbor and guest!! Why would anyone be allowed to "do what they want" and why wouldn't it be the same with slavery!? |

[slm] If a beleiving man had a slave woman who desired chasitiy he was not allowed to force her to be unchaste. If he got a slave woman preagnant the child was the same as a child by his free wives and the woman was elevated to the status of wife but she did not count among the four wife limit. There were probably other differences in her status compared to a free wife. Also if a man married a slave woman and freed her at the same time and she commited some punnishable act, her punnnishment was one half of that given to a woman who was free when she was married and she was not subject to death penalties. also a slave in general is not acountable for any thing they did during slavery, because of the nature of slavery. For this reason among others it was neccessary for slaves to be prepared for the resposibility of being free before it was good to free them. |
